Ncaa at it again "Stop UT"!

Solution to length of game would be to cut back on TV commercials. (Never happen). Add an official to review every play as soon as the whistle sounds and quickly review and let that official call close plays without the drama of the referee walking to the monitor for the review. Too much time is taken on reviews.

A big % of KOs are not returned, so that takes away about 5 minutes to set up KO and down the ball and Special Teams run off and O & D run on. I think they should ask or have a signal from HC after extra point to either spot the ball on 25-yard line and exclude the kickoff. If the HC flags that he wants to KO that would be allowed as option to have possible on-side KO or squib kick etc. This would shorten the length of games especially those with a lot of scoring. Although probably never happen AD $$$ during those in between KO dead times are money makers.
I was thinking along the same lines you pointed out. When they moved the kickoff spot a few years back, it for the most part, eliminated the return. I like the idea of coaches having the option you mentioned.

Can't do that ... takes away the onside kick.

So first, the other teams were flopping against our offense, and now the NCAA is flopping against our offense too. Shocked I tell you. Shocked.

The Ncaa just released a notice it is moving toward "Cutting down on football injuries by limiting the number of plays allowed in a game". (paraphrased). I guess Saban has been Lobbying (again) against the fast teams he doesn't like to compete against. Stay tuned.

This has little to nothing to do with us. If this turns into anything outside of the “player safety” venue, it’ll end up being more of a a “more commercials aired” type of situation within the already blocked off timeframe (if anything).

The original post said to give the coach the option to kick off or take the ball at the 25. The option for an onside kick would still be available.

So pretty much the only time the kickoff would be take would be when an onside kick is upcoming?

This rule would have impacted the outcome of every game where say the team that won scored in the last couple of minutes.

I hate the NFL game and stopped watching about 3 years ago. I can easily do the same for college. This change would have kept UT from beating Bama this year and not surprisingly, here we are. UT needs to start calling spades instead of sitting silently on the sidelines.
The change isn't just for UT's offense. It will affect how our defense prepares also.

Just like Kiffin exploited flopping, Heupel was exploiting the clock and substitution rules.

I want to win as much as anyone. I want the "hurry up" offense to thrive too. If we're winning via exploitation, that's hollow. If we beat Bama's ass because they can't handle our talent, that's sweet.

We seemed to back off on the speed of play this past year, at least compared to the previous season and the offense is more than the fast tempo gimmick. I think Heupel will be able to adapt if they put this in place.

Correct. People misunderstand our offense. It doesn't work because it goes fast, the fast aspect is just a gimmick really. We backed off it a good bit this year and still put up ungodly numbers on offense.

Sorry, I am not seeing it ...
The opposing team could not onside kick ... if I as the coach on one end of the field opt to avoid a kickoff and take say we will take the ball at the 25 yard line. It takes the kickoff OUT of the other teams hands.
If the opposing team sees MY great returner on the other side of the field and waves their hand and says, 'Nawhhhh, we want them to get the ball at the 25.' This point of view takes the decision out of the hands of the other coach(me and my returner).
Either way ... there is no way to win on this one.

These rule proposals haven’t been passed yet, hopefully there will be enough opposition to keep it from happening. They have to know that most of the public aren’t buying their reasonings. Either cut commercials or put a time limit on replays or limit the length of tv timeouts. But don’t mess with game, just leave it alone for once. Most folks are just fine with the length of games. The average game last year was 3 hours 22 minutes. Heck for college football fans that is great, most fans are just going to tune into the next college game on that day. Heck we watch games at tailgates and then go sit and watch our game and then get back to home or hotel and watch some more. Just leave the game alone NCAA, you have a great thing just quit messing with it. GBO

Many are reading this to shortening the time it takes to play a game (4 hours). NCAA actually wants to reduce the number of plays. Thinking 180 plays per game takes a toll on players. More chances of injuries with more plays and injuries from players bodies getting tired and weak.
I can see both sides. I hate injuries for any player but more plays require deeper benches.
The tempo has been good for Tenn’s offense but showed our weakness on defense with little depth.

In order for it to work, it would have to be an option for the team kicking off. Everyone understands that if a team is behind late in the game, and has the potential to win or tie if they recover the on side kick, you can't take that option away from them. If that were the case, the officials could call game if team A is behind and team B doesn't have to worry about the possibility of losing. That would essentially shorten a game.

Taking a hint from Ole Miss when they played us a couple of years ago. Fake some cramps.

What if we lobbied for only one 5 star recruit per team per year. It is unfair and not safe for teams with multiple 5 stars to go up against teams with less talent. Does the NCAA even care about player safety? Why allow such a discreptancy? Why should an Defensive Line with all 5 stars go up against an OL with an average of 3 stars. You are asking for injuries! Its all for player safety. What would Saban say to that?!

You didn't read it. I said the coach would have a option to throw a flag after extra point to opt to kickoff. Would be available every time, so if you still wanted to kick off every time you could. Just a lot of time wasted now going through the motions and most teams have a kicker that can kick it through the end zone. Just pretty boring part of the game. but like I mentioned its dead time for TV ad revenue so it probably would never happen.
