NCAA has denied Tez Walker and UNC's appeal / But now they are gonna let him play 10/5/23

I don't really know a great deal about the whole situation.

What I do know is that the reason given by the athlete for the transfer-and thus the reason for immediate eligibility request is a very sick family member in the Charlotte area.

Last time I made the drive between Charlotte and the Chapel Hill area it was about 2.5 hours late at night with little/no traffic.

I would have far greater sympathy for him if he had transferred to Charlotte and then could see immediate eligibility.

Decisions have consequences

If my understanding is wrong, then sorry-but that's the highlights of what I have read.

"Fulfilling his childhood dream of playing for UNC" when he has already gone through how many schools? Lol.

It is not very difficult to understand. You get one free transfer, and any additional transfer requires that you sit out. It should serve as a reminder to utilize that free transfer wisely and judiciously. I hate the NCAA and it's stupid rules, but for once they aren't completely wrong.

Apparently it is difficult to understand.

The rule was changed to one transfer two days after he enrolled at UNC, so yeah, they got it wrong. And his first school didn't even have a season, it was canceled because of covid.

Terrible. His first school cancelled the season due to Covid. Shame on these a$$holes

Was that not the reason for the "extra year" anyway? Everyone thought the whole season was going to be cancelled.

Without the extra year, would his eligibility not be gone? Which would make this all academic.

Like I said, had he gone to Charlotte-I would not say a word. As things are, this just has the optics of a Justin Fields "racism" claim to aid in school shopping

Surely academic fraud U can find a way to skirt around this ruling without any penalty from the NCAA.

Tbh I don't get why schools aren't taking the Will Wade/LSU approach with the NCAA atp.

You mean when they changed it from zero free transfers to account for these situations?

The one-time transfer rule is a good idea, but the NCAA should have worded it so that players who transferred before the rule took effect were exempt unless they transferred again. Seems like this young man has gotten a raw deal.

I’d like to see them impose a limit on incoming transfers other than “you can take as many as you have leave.” Over half of Colorado’s roster transferring in this offseason is ridiculous.

This! He was well within his rights to transfer to Carolina. If you think he should have went to school in Charlotte over Chapel Hill, that's another discussion. He's a kid that grew up in North Carolina. A lot of kids dream of playing for the flagship school of their state if it's a major university.

It's just a strange thing that the NCAA chose this hill to die on. With everything that has backfired under their watch recently, they had to make a statement. Good luck to Tez moving forward!

I agree that it is some kids dream to play for their states flagship school. In this case though, how many schools has the kid gone through? Apparently each one of them was his dream school also.

As I said, I don't personally care either way-just feel like the way the kid and UNCs PR team have tried to spin this whole story is disingenuous-at best.

About time for all the colleges and universities to consider removing football from the NCAA and having a separate organization just for football. Then we could get away from all the conference realignment stuff that is being done solely for football revenue (and gonna kill many other sport) and get away from the NCAA’s arbitrary and slow governance.

2020 - cancelled. DNP
2021- Kent
2022- Kent
2023-ineligible per NCAA.

It appears he has 2 more seasons of eligibility

Got it, thanks.

Also saw this this link to an old story and quote from Mack a few years ago on a GT board last night and thought it was kinda funny. Sounds like Brian Kelly claiming he never said LSU was gonna destroy FSU when he said it on a radio show lol.

You have to give it to Mack, he said the magic words several times in that response. I bet the decision gets overturned in a week.

I’d agree also except this guy started at a school that cancelled the season. Because of that, I think he deserves a waiver on the first transfer.

The NCAA is the worst thing to ever happen to a college athlete.

"It is unfortunate that UNC failed to provide this important information previously. While we must be careful not to compromise a student-athlete's right to privacy when it comes to sensitive issues, we want to assure the Division I membership and everyone watching how the new transfer rules are applied, that this meets the new transfer waiver standards. UNC's behavior and decision to wage a public relations campaign is inappropriate and outside the bounds of the process UNC's own staff supported. Had the UNC staff not behaved in this fashion and submitted this information weeks ago, this entire unfortunate episode could have been avoided."
