i was reading JP's latest blog on govolsxtra, and it covered the snub on the SEC awards, which he basically said for us to get over it...blah, blah, blah....

but more interesting than that, was his take on the SEC tourney and NCAA tourney....basically debating what the consequences would be for a supposed "tired" TN basketball team making a deep run in the SEC tourney and then hop right back in and expect a 2-3 game run in the NCAAs. He basically said it might be more advantagous for the Vols to get knocked out of the SEC tourney so they could be rested for the NCAAs...rationale: What good is a deep run in the SEC tourney or SEC tourney championship if we get bounced in rd 1 or 2 of the NCAA's?

Nationally speaking, the rationale continues, we get more pub, national exposure by making the sweet 16 than we would ever get by just winning the SEC tourney, or making a deep run in SEC tourney.

i understand the logic, but getting bounced early in the SEC tourney doesn't guarentee anything in the NCAAs.

for me, i say play to win, everytime. Plus we have had this entire week off....so i would like to think we'll be fresh.

Go VOls.

I'd rather win the SEC than get to the Sweet 16, or even the Final Four... years down the road this team deserves to be called "Champions" otherwise people will quickly forget them. Which do you care more about the SEC Champions from 5 years ago, or the Final Four????

I would rather go to the Final Four, hands down

UT has never made it the final four or elite 8, and yes people do care and keep records of where teams finish.

I'd like for them to win both the SEC tournament and the NCAA tournament....but that's just me.

I'd remember an Elite 8 appearance over an SEC title.

Honestly no one really cares outside the conference who wins the tourney title..you'd get much more publicity with a deep run in the NCAA Tourney.

yeah i would definitely choose a long run in the postseason.

have we won the SEC crown before?

we need to move ahead with the program, and that would be accomplished by making a great run for greatness in th NCAA's.

hands down elite 8 or final four. we'd only be the SEC tourney champs, still not the SEC champs.

Wow... you guys surprise me. Okay! Root for us to lose like John Pennington... I'll be pushing for an SEC Champ!!!

Oh, and you ARE the champs of the conf. if you win the tourney. Regular season is nice, but the tourney is what counts... I'm sure in football you'd rather win the regular season over the SECCG? Alrighty then...

That is true in the ACC..but in the SEC, the regular season champs are the conference champs.

That's different... everyone has a chance to win the SEC tourney in basketball this weekend, but only two teams play for it in Atlanta in football. The SEC football tourney begins when conference play begins. It's been said before, but a regular season conference championship is more impressive than getting hot for 3 or 4 days.

However you wanna slice it, you both get to put banners up...

I'm not disputing that, in a perfect world UT would win the regular season and conference tourney.

yeah which i think its better because a team cant just get hot and win the tourney and say they are champs. Regular season is about 15 games and proves who the real best team is.

so i think it's safe to say that most would agree that the SEC tourney, while nice on the resume, isn't a must.

I would agree with that, but to say an early exit from the SEC would promise a run in the NCAA is not accurate.

i say play to win, everytime you step on the court.

can we not get the sec title and a final four apperance?

yeah, it's possible...but the actual debate was does an early exit from the SEC tourney help our chances in the NCAA?

oh well then yeah i guess it would. we need as much rest as possible.

Pearl said he considered it a lack of respect for the opposition to suggest resting any players.

"We'll have to do everything we can to beat our first opponent," he said. "I can't imagine saving anything."

Early SEC Toruney Exit:
Pros:
Rest-Refocus-Heal-Practice-Teach-You're already in the NCAA so you don't need any SEC wins to make the dance.

Cons:
No competition
Lose the edge
Lose killer instinct, aggressiveness
Potential injury
Boredom
More time for others to get arrested and miss the NCAA

P.S. If you are going to field a team, play to win everyday the best you can.

Playing not to lose is what has bewildered our football program.

We haven't won an SEC Championship since 1979. Thats a trophy and a banner to hang and show recruits. The Final Four is big, however, it is forgettable. People already have a hard time remembering the Final Four from last year, let alone 2 and 3 years ago.

Don't get me wrong about this though, I would rather have a National Championship than an SEC Championship.

Well, according to everyone else, winning the conference during the season is more important... we have that on a banner from 2000.
