NCAA Women’s Tournament Thread

Remember Stanford is a level above Tenn and ND is a level above Stanford ND will win with no problem.

You still have to make shots. Point remains that Stanford actually shoots the ball really well. And had been on fire the last month up until that game. Usually a good shooting team isn’t going to have two games like that in a row. Stanford also has the size to compete on the inside against ND defensively.

Oregon is a similar offensive team but they actually have more shooters. Go look at what Stanford did to them in the PAC-12 tournament.

Missouri State was able to shut Stanford down defensively, but couldn't balance with scoring. We'll see if Notre Dame has the D for Stanford, or if their scoring capability will be enough.

Missouri State didn't shut them down. Stanford missed a ridiculous number of wide open shots. Their worst shooting of the year at 25% overall and 10% from 3's, from a team that shoots 43% overall for the year.

I agree, that’s the way I saw it. Stanford was getting open looks from every spot on the court but they had a lid on the rim. They couldn’t even hit a layup which is highly unusual for them. I watched almost all of their games this season, I don’t antiticpate we will see that same kind of performance against ND.

You all actually attribute a 55-46 point game exclusively to missed shots?

I'm not a Miss St fan and really didn't care who won that game yesterday but how many over the backs on rebounds can Refs miss in one game. Refs in WCCB are terrible and getting worse.

Yep, that was the McCowan effect. Because she’s so much larger and physically stronger the officials think it’s somehow OK for players to just maul her. Then on the other end she gets called for perfectly clean blocks because she looks scary.

That one in the first half where Hebard literally pulled Carter down on top of her and they gave the foul to Carter was one of the worst calls I’ve seen in a long time. I would have picked up a tech there for sure.

Sounds like you only watched their last game. Stanford can definitely shoot. They were just ice cold in their last game. Go watch their game against UT lol.
That's true... but they did lose by 40 to Oregon. I tend to think their game with Notre Dame will be a little closer to that result.

Did you actually watch the game? For your posts I'd gather not. Both teams shot 25% from the field and 15% and 10% from 3's. They were both missing wide open shots whether they were 3 pointers, 10 footers, 3 footers, layups, etc... It was a dismal display of bball, that looked like 5 year old CYO ball. Both teams played horrible.

Carter in position to get the rebound and goes straight up with both arms and grabs it, Hebard comes flying in behind and hits her from behind causing Carter to fall backwards. That was a call where the only logical explanation was that the ref got the players mixed up.

It was baffling. Couldn’t even make a case of missing the first contact and calling the second. All of the contact was initiated and continued by Hebard.

I think it was a combination of factors. Stanford did miss a lot of open looks and clise shots, but it's not like MoSt was just leaving them wide open all game and not defending drives at all. I also tjought Stanford was a little surprised at MoState's aggressive rebounding, which is one of their strengths.

MoSt was never a great-shooting tea from outside this season. They came on strong in their tournament and really improved their 3-point shooting at the end of the season (especially Willard). One of their best 3-point specialists, Elle Rufferidge, is so small that I don't think she got off a single shot against Stanford.

I think Mo St chose to leave Coffee (AKA the Lone Ranger) open outside but otherwise defended fairly well. Stanford was cold as ice, but Mo St disrupted, too. And when the shorts weren't falling, Stanford got frustrated and tightened up even more.

We need team leaders like Gitzen. A small guard doesn't score 14 and get 10 rebounds against a top ten team by accident. Gitzen improved all four years under the Harpers and Stiles and was fearless all season. She really exemplified what you want to see in a team leader and representative of the university and program.

It was also a big call because that would have been the 3rd foul on Hebard. She also got them to call on offensive foul on McCowan when Teaira went up to catch a pass and Ruthy arm-barred her with her elbow, causing McCowan to arch her back and lose her balance. She arm-barred with her elbow on nearly every play when Teaira was posting up, and I don't think she was called for it once. With the amount of times that ASU did that in the S16, you'd think the refs would have been looking for it.

I’m sorry, just asking. Can anyone say scapegoat?

Seriously, does anyone have any data as to why the women and not the men? NCAA sure seemed to let all those academics issues slide. So why now? And why the women?

From Raoul : How long until the first Walz to UNC rumor surfaces?

Post defenders may use an arm bar against an offensive player whose back is to the basket, with or without the ball, but the forearm may not be extended to push.
NCAA rules change — confusing coaches, players and fans alike
