NCAAT Game Thread: Lady Vols vs Buffalo/Belmont

We just don't have shooters. After watching game after game, I don't know how you can come to any other conclusion. It's not as though this game is an anomaly. This is how we shoot in the vast majority of our games.
If we can't overwhelm our opponents on the boards, we have little chance of winning the game. I don't like it but it is what it is.
Great point, and I agree, but knowing this I can’t understand why we have little motion on offense and players stand and watch someone drive it to the basket and throw up a prayer or throw it away

Team really needs a lot more speed on the perimeter. Not just speed players that can score. Were way to big and slow at to many positions. We bring in Miles and Wynn were faster, but offensively challenged. Buffalo is smart they are not going to let Darby get any open shots. Key looked far better early in the season than now. Maybe that was Horston.

Not just on the perimeter. I think we have some of the slowest bigs out there too.

Burrell has never looked the same since her injury too

Team Speed is just anemic

It's a part of the problem for folks. We spent thirty years with a roster of 12-14 All Americans. People got spoiled. The best of the best starting, with the near best of the best on the bench. There's an assumption around here that things are still that way, and a lack of awareness that it's been a hot minute since Tennessee was loaded in that way. I've seen people talk about players over the past few years like every one of them was a first team All American, just because. So-and-so would come in and do this or that, but no logic behind it. Just assumptions. It's just not where Tennessee is today. Doesn't mean they don't have talent, or they aren't good, or whatever, but it's not like it was back in the 2000s. There are a lot of things to work on for this program, and a lot of room to get better at positions and skills.

And don't get me wrong. They can, and probably will, win today. If they play well and advance, they can win the next one too - though it'll be very hard. They're down their best player and they don't have a lot of options to replace what they've lost during the season. So. Just have to enjoy it for what it is.

Watching the game with my girlfriend,, ladies having
trouble keeping up with Buffalo's fast pace attack.
Sloppy ball control,, some unnecessary steals by buffalo. No 3 pointers by Tennessee

Leading shooting 13 of 41 is a miracle. At least the turnovers are about even. We did well on the offensive boards, but really scored no points from the effort.

TD who can shoot doesn't have a go to move besides waiting on an open jumper and that hurts the offense hence 0 points

10 turnovers in the first half and 0 3s. Oh, my. At one point in the second quarter Key received a pass when standing 3 feet from the basket and she immediately passed the ball back outside. Uh, not smart basketball...you're not going to get closer than that.

In the offseason, I hope the coaching staff puts on a week long clinic on how to make 2 foot shots. Keeping it high, using the backboard, etc. Then a second weak long clinic on how not to pass into the teeth of the opposing defense.

You really are out on a limb and must not have watched the last 5 or 6 seasons. There has been no offensive identity with the Lady Vols for years.
I agree.. little change, but players standing around offensively while someone drives to the basket and throws up a prayer or turns it over.

To defend them, if you are the #2 all-time program in the sport, you should be recruiting that way.

Blue Bloods in sports do that. They should have the best players. We have a lot to sell. Only UConn and maybe South Carolina is a better destination in Women's Basketball. We should have more talent than the competition based on our program status.

For example in football, programs like Alabama, Ohio State, etc. just reload their talent, they don't rebuild.

I do think the new coach can get us there and I am patient. This is kind of a throw away year. However, the expectations should be there. If we don't have the talent, that is the fault of the coaching staff for NOT recruiting it.

We never run any screens for her either. Someone needs to pick up the scoring in the next half. Sara and Rae can both put up some points and one of them needs to wake up.

This she just need to turn and drop it in she was that close lol

Oh, wow: I just made the same point about the same play--didn't see this post. Yea, You're the biggest/tallest player on the floor and you get the ball 2 feet from the basket: what are you doing passing it back outside? Injuries have hurt, but we're playing like we did under Warlick--bad decisions, poor movement and passing, missing shots, mediocre defense....

I couldn't. I could never. The men have fought for forty years to be relevant. This year, finally, Tennessee basketball has played at a level few teams have. People talk about them with respect. Even if you told me - flat out promised me - that I could choose and the football team would be great, or even win a national title, I would reject that. They deserve their own success.

I have faith in Rick Barnes. If we don't get to a Final Four this year, he will eventually get us there as long as he keeps up the energy and program he is running. Sometimes it takes a little luck as well to make it far in the Men's Tournament. We haven't had that luck yet :(.

That is true, but what we should have, and what we do have, I think people can be a little out of touch on those. I don't have blame to assign, I just think it's easy for a lot of us to forget that Tennessee, down its backup center and its star player, doesn't have a lot of answers in its bullpen and for whatever reason hasn't managed to recruit all the answers yet. I agree the expectations should be there. I agree they need to show some progress, and soon. But here, and now, well ... it is what it is.

The one metric that I am counting is the program seems to be improving year over year with Harper. I think the injuries messed up a lot this year but that is another story in itself because we should not have been so dependent on 2 players for our success.
