NCAAT Game Thread: Lady Vols vs Buffalo/Belmont

Was hoping to see a deep dive into Buffalo. They have the dynamic quick guard Fair, but was curious about their style of play and what their strengths and weaknesses are from a team standpoint.

Update: Buffalo is a good rebounding team, they get to the line often and shoot 73% from there. They score well but don’t defend well. This team could give us headaches due to their strong rebounding and ability to draw fouls …TK can’t afford early foul trouble which is a strong possibility. I’m hoping for the best but this may not be a good matchup for us. Hoping we can score against them.

Buffalo got in foul trouble against South Carolina. We don’t use our height to our advantage as well as SC but maybe they can also get in foul trouble against us. This will be an interesting one.

I’m more concerned about that game than any other potential matchup if I’m being honest. My stomach is in knots.. but I have faith that neither Rae nor Snoop(to go along with every other girl on this team) want to go out without at least a S16 matchup and making it to regionals to at least get a chance to really Dance

Watching this first play-in game is already special. For the families and friends and classmates of these kids, it must be incredibly exciting to see their teams play and have the big-name announcers calling the game. Tennessee has always been in this limelight, but not these kids. It's kinda touching to think about how special an experience this is for these players, even knowing that if they win this one they will face South Carolina. I guarantee you they will love every second of it. 🤗

Dayton clobbering DePaul. Dayton has a post player who blocks shots just like former Duke star Chante Black. Anyone remember her?

Yep, I remember her.

Dayton is always tough, but they are having one of those rare magical games tonight, making Depaul look far worse than they probably actually are.

I have been critical of the Selection Committee's inclusion of DePaul into the Tourney (as was Charlie Creme) and I was going to lay out a statistical case for my objections. But the Dayton team just made the Committee's folly more obvious than I ever could. A 33 point loss in the 65 v. 66 game.

Just something interesting, not to detract from this big game.
From the Charlotte Observer:

Buffalo coach Felisha Legette-Jack recalled meeting Summitt over a meal, then getting a tear in her eye when the coach called her by name at a Final Four years later. “I don’t get star struck. I met President Obama and Magic Johnson, I’ve met a lot of people in my life. Nothing, hi, hello," Legette-Jack said. "But Pat Summitt was somebody. ... It’s going to be etched in my brain for the rest of my life. And so I get the ... greatness that these young people may feel here, because I sense it too.”

Did anyone see the look of determination on Karoline Striplin’s face when she was fighting to score in our last game? I’m hoping during this time we’ve had off before tomorrow’s game, that Kellie has been working with Striplin. Sometimes determination can make up some for a lack of experience. I believe Striplin can help the team in this tournament.

Tamari, make your shots and blocks, and hang tough.

I hope Alexus has a fantastic NCAA Tournament, she can be a huge factor.

Sara has boxed out well for someone to get the rebound, but if Horston is not in the game, Sara herself needs to become an aggressive rebounder.

Hoping whoever gets tied up driving to the basket remembers to kick the ball out to Rae and Tess who may be open for 3 pointers. Make your shots girls.

Walker and Miles need to protect our ball, and make sharp accurate passes.

Everyone shooting must focus on the basket and finish the shot, and shoot with confidence and determination.

Defend Defend Defend from the very beginning of the game.

GO LADY VOLS!!!

Oregon coach Kelly Graves also had a nice story during his official pre-Tournament interview (should be on U-Tube). My version: At a tournament in the Virgin Islands--maybe 15 years ago now--Graves (then a coach at Gonzaga) went down to the hotel restaurant for a "late" dinner. It was closed and he met Pat coming out with a pizza. She graciously invited him to her room to share, he accepted, and they spent an enjoyable meal mostly talking about their children. (Tyler was there; Graves has 3 boys himself.) The upshot was a home and home for the two teams during the next two seasons, since there was a Byorklund sister on each team.

Getting ready to go to game. TBA gonna clear out quick to get ready to watch men's game. Afraid Belmont and Oregon will be playing to crickets.

If we can have SEC Tourney versions of Rae and Dye I think we'll be ok today.

Really looking forward to the double header. I’m hoping we get solid performances from Sara and Karoline as well.
