So I live in Charlotte, NC and was listening to Mark Packer on the local sports talk radio here. Some idiot ND fan was arguing that Jimmy Clausen was going to win the Heisman and ND stood a realistic shot at getting to the BCS title game, all the while Packer kept asking this guy what Weis' signature win was and of course the guy stumbled and sidestepped the question. This was the e-mail I sent in that got referenced on the show.

"Pack,

I was listening to your show on the way home and heard that idiot Notre Dame fan. Notre dame hasn't been relevant in big time college football in 20 years. In fact in the last 10 years they have beaten virtually no one. The top 25 teams they have played in the last several years, have beaten the pants off of them. I'm so sick and tired of these ND fans that think they are God's gift to football. They talk about their tough schedule, who exactly is it they are talking about because honestly outside of Michigan and USC they don't play anyone. ND has exactly 1 ranked team on their schedule. Looking at this schedule right here in front of me, I would consider this year a complete failure if ND doesn't win 11 games, because there is no reason they shouldn't beat the likes of UConn, Pitt, Stanford, Navy, BC, and Wash. State (real tough schedule by the way). They haven't won a major bowl game in as long as I can remember, they never even came close to winning the BCS bowls(LSU, Oregon State) they've been in since the establishment of the BCS. Also I'm sorry but if your name isn't Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford or Colt McCoy you aren't winning the Heisman, though as a consolation prize Jimmy will get a free trip to NYC to watch one of them accept the award."

I think everyone will find out how good ND really is when they play USC this weekend! Trojans will probably crush them..

However, if Clausen has a great game -- ESPN would love a ND QB getting the prize.

And I live in Charlotte as well, and that show is the reason I thank my in-laws everyday for getting me Sirius radio. That is possibly the worst sportstalk radio show in the country. Packer can't talk intelligently on more than 2 subjects-college basketball and ACC Football. He refuses to discuss the Bobcats (way to support the local team, Mark) and bashed the Panthers back when they were actually good.

I also hate Notre Dame. I agree that ND has no shot at the BCS title game and that their schedule is a joke, but Clausen would be in the Heisman race if he has a really good game vs. USC.

Ya, that must be it. :whistling:

Because he's terrible, right? I know I hate QB's that complete 70% of their passes and lead the country in passing efficiency. Couldn't have used that for the UCLA game.

Regardless, how iS calling ND awful or Clausen overrated an indicator of jealousy. The guy has yet to see a respectable defense and can't touch several other guys with that dame issue. Houston, Cincy....

Why are we even discussing ND on this board, then? Why not let them worry about their game against USC and over here we can worry about Alabama. And if your criteria for good QB play is good competition than Colt McCoy's name should be no where near the top of the Heisman race-they have played no one. It doesn't matter what happened last year. And poor competition or not-Clausen has been next to perfect, and he isn't padding stats against FCS or MAC teams. Granted, Purdue and MSU are having terrible years, but a 4th quarter drive for a win is still a 4th quarter drive for a win. Do you think Jevan Snead could have pulled out those wins, or Crompton in the same situation? I just have a hard time believing UT fans would not want this kid as the QB for this team, that's all.

We talk ND because it's a sports board. As to the Heisman list, I don't make it. If I did, none of those QBs would be on it. Game changers like Arenas and Tebow would be.

I'm on a sports board...really? I thought this was Joe Buck's second favorite website. Whoops, my bad, but I'll give more of my opinion anyway....I just don't understand how people (on a sports board no less) argue against a kid who is leading the nation in passing efficency, and has had games recently where he has completed over 85% of his passes, and several stretches of going 14/15, or 20/22. Granted-he has not done this against a USC, or a Florida, but he isn't doing it agains UC Davis, Rice, or Ohio for that matter either. What were Crompton's numbers against Ohio again. Nevermind, no need to answer that. I just think it's always easy to sit back and hate ND because of their coach, tv contract, BSC tie-in, or whatever. But it does not make sense to not give credit to a kid who has grown up by leaps and bounds over the course of the past 2 and a half seasons as a QB. I figured that on a "sports board" people would understand that. I guess I miscalculated how rational this "sports board" was.

Nice delusion. Growing means nothing if you started as a disaster. Recall, all of these college QBs look good against weak competition with open receivers everywhere; it's what got them recruited. I give you Big 12 QBs in general from last season. All looked like world beaters. Funny how that dried up against respectable defenses. As another example, my QB rating is enormous when I'm all time QB for the kids' neighborhood pickup games.

As to ND, I couldn't care less. When they're good, they'll get credit. When they suck, they'll reap what they've sown by remaining independent and playing cupcakes. Don't bother with the "but they play USC every year" comment. Losing 247 times consecutively isnt of any merit. It's like us arguing that we play UF every year. So what.

I think we have a closet ND fan on our hands.

Full disclosure-I grew up a fan and still am; however, I married into a crazed UT family, would not root for them until Fulmer was gone (unless they were playing the Big Ten or Pac 10), and I am now a pretty hardcore UT fan-we have had season tickets for 4 years. I'm sure you will have a problem with this, but I don't really care. It doesn't mean Clausen isn't any good, though.

Growing up means nothing? Serioulsy? That's the argument? Getting better does not count? Huh? Where am I?

It means it's only relative. I grew between my junior and senior years, but it didn't mean that I was one of the best in the country. I even boasted damn good stats, but my team played to my strengths. There were thousands better than me. Hell, I even won a postseason award that I didn't deserve because my stats were good.

Was this in a pickup game, or actual organized games? I'm just confused because a few posts ago you compared playing against kids in a neighborhood game to playing against Michigan in the Big House, Michigan State, Purdue, and Washington. Those must have been some good kids. Is Kiffin recruiting there? Have you seen Coach O? Any future UT Wild Boyz?...so basically-however you start your career as a 19 year old freshman is how you are-that's it. You can't get any better from that point on?

What does it matter. The level of the competition drives QB stats. It is driving Clausen's now. The Big House is a joke moreso than Neyland. Going 3-9 will do that to a place.

I didn't say he can't get better. He can. I'm saying the comment is meaningless as it's only as useful as the base comparative is known. The base in this case was awful. Improvement from there simply means better than awful. Congrats on that. Playing against a bunch of no D playing big ten teams will certainly overblow things. Troy Smith looked like Johnny U for a season, until UF made him look utterly pathetic.

Nd will continue to get a lot of hate and will deserve it until they decide to join the Big-10.

Ah that explains all of your defensiveness and delusional talk.

Yeah those are some great teams right there. Purdue who has won 1 game this year and really should have beaten ND if it weren't for that awful coaching call at the end.

Look-what Clausen does tomorrow will define him a great deal. He without a doubt has to have a good game to add some more legitimacy to his current numbers-there is no denying that. I understand that playing subpar teams can pad your stats-it's one of the reasons I could not stand the Big 12 last year and all the love their offenses got when they all clearly featured defenses that thought they were playing flag football. I do take some issue with the Troy Smith comment. Granted, he had a poor game, but that was not entirely on him. From the sound of it you played QB, and as someone else that played the position it should be pretty obvious that your play is very dependent on the play of those around him. Smith got little help from his o-line that day-his tackles were abused to no end. Similar to Clausen's first year at ND. It's hard to throw when the rush is immediately on you.
