Greetings all.
I have a dear friend that grew up with that has been in jail in a Russian detention center since 01-13-2022. Soon, an ABC news story will be out and I want to spread the word to as many people as I can. I'm trying to get enough visibility to get attention from politicians everywhere as far up the tree as the President (or maybe further). The Ukraine war isn't helping. Is "The Pub" the right place for this kind of thing? I stay out of the political forums but that might be better. I only post if Football and NCAA, so I haven't spent a lot of time carousing these other things. I was actually interviewed (05-17-2022) by ABC as well as some other family members. The story has been being edited and I'm getting hints that it's about to air.
@Freak please advise. It's an interesting story and very heartbreaking. Details of what it's actually all about will be provided when I figure out where to put this.

Interested in the details of the story.
I was going to wait until I figured out the right place. I did put something on facebook that was somewhat detailed and in haste, I'll do a cut and paste in the post just after this one.

She then kidnapped them and returned to Russia. In December, he went and hired a Russian attorney to establish visitation. Unknown to him, she accused him of the same thing there and he was detained (Jan 13, 2022). That's 5 months as I write this. He has a trial upcoming (fall?) and if convicted, it could be an 8-12 year sentence in a Russian Jail.

The allegations were cringeworthy and had to do with pedophilia. So before that soaks in too far - I know him. Grew up with him, and know how he loves his two boys. I too am a divorced guy and although my boys are about a decade older, I know he is missing a lot as a parent by not being able to see his kids grow.

When Tennessee played Texas A&M a few years ago, my son and I went and stayed with David in Houston. During that visit, his oldest son was staying with him (The youngest was still an infant). I watched how David interacted with "little David" and there was a lot of happiness there on both sides. He had set up a room in his place for David's visitation. Little guy had a drum set and and actually was learning rhythm and not just banging randomly. David (dad) put David (son) got his son to wind down and go to bed by putting a video of Lava flowing, which I thought was genius. That kid conked right out.

His ex decided she didn't like David having anything to do with these boys and she did a "hail Mary" and made these allegations. The police raided his place and took his cell phone and computers. They ended up keeping these things for over a year. He then had a trial in Houston. Legal costs about drained him, but he prevailed. Child Protective services and social workers spent time with each of the kids and reported to the court "Nothing to see here" and there was strong indication that the kids testimony was "coached".

David was afraid of a flight risk and had the court confiscate the passports of the kids. What happened next was criminal. The court put the passports in the hands of her attorney, and a few days after the trial, she (and her mom.. her Russian mother was living with her and also him during their marriage), took off to Russia with the kids. The youngest wasn't a Russian citizen, so a stop in Turkey got him credentials and they ended up in Moscow.

Now David went to work in Houston for a two year period. Drained of money through legal expenses, he started filing the things that are needed to get her legal rights to the kids revoked, and make sure that if she ever came back, she would end up where other kidnappers end up. Also he filed a suit against the attorney that gave her the passports (he didn't prevail there, but it is under appeal and was at the time of his detention).

He had to have papers served to her, so he hired a P.I. firm in Houston that deals in these sort of international things. What he didn't know was that when they served her in Moscow- she freaked out and went to the police and filed the same charges as she did in Houston.

So David then pays for a Russian attorney and went over there naively thinking he could file for visitation rights and finally get to see his boys. He even asked me to go with him and help him, and I couldn't, so I didn't. Svetlana got wind of him being there and had him arrested. That's where we are today.

The producer of the ABC story feels like he got a real scoop and he came to Huntsville (where I grew up with David) and interviewed his sisters and me. He was amazed that nobody had picked up this story. I told him I hope he wins the Pulitzer prize for it. Last communication with him, (07-01-22) he said the story is about on the eve of being shown.

Also, the P.I. firm in Houston is doing a fantastic job of trying to get attention to this story. There is a former Governor of New Mexico (Bill Richardson) that has a foundation that negotiates the release of Americans trapped overseas. He helped did an inmate swap with a guy named Trevor Reed and many others. He is aware of David's situation and he says the story that ABC has needs to break and get the news in the national media. Right now, as I type, the Britany Grinder trail is underway in Moscow and she's been in much the same limbo as David.

Attaching David's last correspondence and a couple of pictures of us camping on Tim's Ford lake in the '70's as kids (me on the left). There are way more details here, but I know the awful allegations she accused him of are false, and he's truly suffering now. Hope it is legible here.

A link: I see this resource as something that could ultimately get David Home. Richardson is aware of David's situation and wants the ABC story to break and get national attention. Hopefully Vol Nation can help get the message out there. Hard to get help when the story is unknown to most.

Thank you for sharing, just out of curiosity, why or what caused the ex-wife to accuse him of these things? Just straight up jealously?

She sounds unhinged.

I can't speak for his story, but I have seen for a fact women can do that. My sister in law was running around on her second husband, and he was fighting for custody. She's crazy, not enough time for the stories, but legit crazy. She had a daughter by her first husband, and two boys by her second. She was dumb enough to text her second husband after they split, and told him if he didn't stop fighting for custody, then she'd tell the judge that he was doing that crap to her daughter. Watching her shower, trying to get with her and stuff. Like I said, thankfully she was dumb enough to text that, and he showed the judge. She lost custody of her boys.

There are a couple of real problems with David's case. First and foremost, it's the Russian legal system. They keep asking for original records from the Houston trial, and they have sent them, but they come back and ask for the original records. Arrgh.. and since David hasn't laid eyes on his sons in 2 years, all the trial is about is what happened in Houston. He never even saw them in Moscow. The statements they got from the kids are sickening (they have been coached) and I'm afraid the court is going to disregard anything that happened in Houston. Even his attorney said the Russian judicial system in more about being punitive than judicial. If they don't take the Houston stuff into consideration, it's obviously a rigged game.

I've been working with his sister Carol to try and get an email system in place for David to send and receive messages. The site you go to lets you input your message for 55 rubles and then pay for his reply for another 25. Problem is, when you go to "check out", all credit cards say "bank declined". Most likely it's the sanctions, but I can tell you there communication with him is sparse. He get's most of his messages when his attorney visits and that's about every 3 weeks. It took 5 months to get him an English Bible and the embassy had to pull strings. And even if you can get an email to him, they go through a censor. Been told to not mention Ukraine or anything political. So David is sitting there in the dark with his trial looming.

The last real problem I'll mention, and it's kind of the elephant in the room. With these kind of accusations, anyone that has an inkling of doubt that David's story it true, could easily say "Let him rot". That's like kryptonite for getting support. And the real sad thing is, I feel like I'm one of the few that really really really know this guy. I know how crazy he is is about being a father and I've also been on the receiving end of phone calls from him that go something like "OMG, you'll never guess what she's done now". She was doing bizarre stuff long before she accused him of this. She is evil.

She was always questioning David's parenting even before any of these accusations came out. He me a lot griping about her attitude long before the divorce and the accusations. The only time I was ever around her was at David's mom's funeral here in Huntsville and even then, she was asking me about scolding and punishment and seemed to want validation from me that David's approach was wrong. Also she has lived with her Russian mother all through the marriage (and probably still with her). Those two wouldn't speak English around the house and David asked them to not do that, but he was cut out of the conversations most of the time. Part of me thinks the Mom did Svetlana's thinking for her.

Here is a picture of David and "little David" at his Mom's funeral that I took. That little guy just turned 12.

Svetlana is smarter than your sister in law, and just as evil. Makes this whole thing harder. I know some guys that have been through some rough divorces and I don't want to cheapen the pain that they endured, however I think, short of murder, having your ex put you in a Russian jail sets the bar pretty high for a worst case scenario.

A former pastor of mine, he's dead now, was put on a jury about 12 years ago. It was a wealthy man who lives in our area, and he was being accused of molesting his two grandchildren. Everyone around knew him, was shocked, and automatically turned on him. I get that, I have nothing for anyone who really hurts a kid, zero tolerance. There had been a dispute between that man and his son and daughter in law over money. During the trial the two kids were saying the things they were "supposed to say", until the oldest broke down on the stand, and said it wasn't true. Her parents had told them that if they didn't do it, then they wouldn't get their grandpa's money. The sad part, other than ruining his reputation, the ones lying didn't get on any trouble. Like I said, I have zero tolerance for anyone who hurts a kid like that, I'd donate the bullet. However, I have learned from that, and my SIL, people can be garbage, and use kids to destroy someone.

All that in work, however they get inundated and it's hard to get a call back. That's why it's critical to get this story out there and get it viral. His incarceration is hell for him right now. His cellmates are not fond of him because he's American and they give him a very hard time for the little things, like leaving a hair in the sink. I learned this from one of his earlier letters. Meals are being supplemented from a friend of a friend that knows someone in Moscow. Even then, with sanctions, it's hard to get cash to "Pollie" to get he supplements going. Cigarettes and fruit are currency in prison and he is forced to share with his cellmates. Dogs bark constantly. He was moved from "Sailors Calm" (Detention Center no. 7) to number 5, and 5 is better than 7, but still a hole. I can imagine the mental torture he is experiencing and if and when he does get his feet back on U.S. soil, I expect a long recovery. Personally, I would love to get him out for a cold beer with mutual friends and hear some stories, but that is selfish. I thing he would not really want to re-live it just to indulge my curiosities and I wouldn't want to put that on him.

He's constantly on my mind. I took a hiking trip up to Max Patch (on the Appalachian trail a tad north of the Smoky's). What a peaceful, solitary and beautiful place on God's earth, and my mind drifted to him in the hellhole. What he wouldn't give to be where I was. Message is, enjoy your freedoms and be grateful for them. There are those that don't have them.

Well put. I'll add that David has a brilliant mind. He's documented about everything for the last 5 years. He even has text messages where she was wanting to get back together even after the initial accusations. Many contradictions in her story. He is documenting it for his sons. He may not get to see them for many many years. There WILL come a day when they will have an epiphany on how their mother robbed them of having a father. Even that isn't a happy ending. It's just a shame. Regardless of how this plays out, it won't end well. There are lots of scenarios that are better though.

Also- I've been following the Britany Grinder story. She's been jailed a long time (but not as long as David). Media implies Russia dragging their feet in getting her to trial. It's not her, it's just the way Russia is. David's cellmates are saying that no matter what you are accused of over there, probably a 90 percent chance they find you guilty. The outcome of the WNBA player BG should be known soon.

So the story just broke on ABC news this morning. Here is the email I got from the executive producer, sent to David's sisters and me.

-----Paste ----
Good morning Carol, Margaret, and Paul,

Thank you again to the three of you for taking the time to sit down with me in Huntsville in May. I greatly appreciate that you each shared David's story with the American people. I know it has been a while, but after a lengthy fact-checking and approval process, a web story about David is at the top of ABCNews.com right now. A direct link is here: Family pleads for release of Texas father held in Russia following custody battle. The videos that appear in the story are automatically generated and are not related to the text of the story itself, but I will let you know if I hear about a television element.

Let's stay in touch and as always, please let me know if you hear any updates from Russia.

Have a happy 4th.

Best,
Jared

I posted this in "The Pub". Looking for a spot on Volnation where I can get a little visibility. End goal is for this story to get out and land under the nose of someone that can make things happen.

Below is what I posted in "The Pub". Hinted that an ABC story was in the works. That story broke this morning (Happy July 4th) and currently is their lead story for the day. YEAH!!

My good friend David Barnes is suffering an injustice. For those that don't know, his ex wife, a Russian Citizen made some false claims about David to try and deny him access to his children. It is ridiculous that a mere accusation can ruin a man’s life. I’m praying for David and his sons. Praying for his release and his family to reunite here.
Is there anyone in particular to contact regarding David’s situation who might be in a position to help him?

Just saw the story on Yahoo as well. It’s gaining traction. I hope and pray he gets released and can return him with his children.
This is wonderful news. I post on VolNation and feel more comfortable here as a social media thing than even Facebook. Of course VFL's like me understand. Having the ABC story released this morning surely legitimizes his situation. I really want this to get into the news big time. I emailed the UK daily mail this morning with a link to the ABC story. They are tabloid like, but still they have a huge following. Would like to see the NYT and others pick this up and run with it.

I know this guy. I went to UT/ Texas A&M game and my son and I stayed in Houston in his apartment that weekend with this oldest child. (Kamara almost won that game single handed. His performance was epic that day.. Butch, why was he on the bench??) I saw them interact and saw happiness and love for each other both directions. This is 100% evil and BS what she is doing to the father of her kids.

If anyone has any ideas on how to spread this story further, I'm open to suggestions. Put on your thinking caps!!

P.S. Breaking news. Houston local picked it up and it was just sent to me. Story is taking off. Still doesn't mean we can get lazy.

Sounds like the American legal system is not much better than Russia's when it comes to fathers. I swear this is a wicked society we have when all it takes is an allegation with no evidence to have these goon cops swoop in and raid your home. Then of course, the judge giving the passports to her attorney? Comical...

Seems to me like he has just as much beef with the courts here in America.
