If you don't want to sit out and "tend" to your smoker, I would suggest getting a maverick remote temp gauge. Works great and allows you to chill in the house and watch some tv while still monitoring your smoke

I concur. I love tending to the smoker during football season. There's just something different in the air early on game day. Speaking of which, I noticed a little bit of that something in the air last Friday morning. It was glorious.

I've been noticing it for about a week or so,just the way the day feels. I'm so ready to get this season going I'm probably just making something out of nothing lol

I've got a Masterbuilt 30" with no window. Good stuff. Real easy. Set it and forget. Just add a few chips now and again.

Lowes, Amazon, Homedepot, etc. all run these on sale from time to time. I suspect within the month they are going to start knocking down a lot of the summer items and grills, etc.

After your suggestions and doing a ton of research I think I'm going to get the Masterbuilt 40. Apparently there are 3 different generations of models and the 2nd generation is to be avoided at all costs. The first generation is supposed to be really good and the newest bluetooth model is supposed to be really good. Thanks for all your help guys!

If it's likely to be left in the elements on occassion would an analog be the better option? Also would it be feasible to have it on a covered porch?

Mine is kept on my deck under the screened in section. I use it in there too. They don't pump out tons and tons of smoke. You'd be fine.

Mine is right outside my master bedroom. From going in and out the master might have a slightly smoky taste, but nothing more than the rest of the house after you bring your goods inside.

I bought a cover for mine and pull it back under cover when not in use. I used it on a screened in porch in VA and never had an issue

I'm a BGE fan myself but know a guy who has a Traeger. It runs off of wood pellets and it pretty much set and forget. I used a WSM for many years and I really liked it, except on windy days. It was cumbersome to maintain temps.

If you aren't hung up on set and forget you could build an UDS on the cheap.

Personally I would go with a kamado style smoker like the egg. You could prepare some meat a day ahead for the large group, then once that party is over you can use the egg for grilling, pizza oven, etc.

Bump on this one. I was looking at electric smokers and I've seen some that sit on the ground and some up on legs. Is there any advantage to having them one way or another?

The legs are nice because you don't have to bend down as much to put stuff in the smoker. I really like the Bluetooth Masterbuilt Electric Smoker. I have two of them. They come in a 30" and 40". I recommend the 40". Sams club sells it cheaper than what you can get at Cabelas or Amazon or anywhere else I've seen it and it includes the legs (a $50 or so extra if you get it somewhere else). Lastly if you get it at Sams Club you can get their 4 year warranty for only an extra $30 or so and it is definately worth it.

I have the masterbuilt electric andi love it. I doesn't have the legs but I think the new model does. I wish mine had legs for two main reasons.

1. Without the legs you can't lay your food down in front of the door because the door will hit it when it opens. You want to be quick when adding or removing food because you want to preserve the heat in the smoker. Having legs alows you to place a pan on the ground right in front of smoker to catch droppings as you remove it and not have the door in your way.

2. The smoker will occasionally over flow the drip pan and leak on the floor. I bought a washing machine pan and set mine in it to catch the overflow. If you had legs you could just put an aluminum pan under it and it would be easy cleanup.

Look up the Orion Smoker/Cooker. It's one of the simplest and affordable, at about $149. The quality of the finished products you'll get is amazing. For the number of people you're having you'd need more than one, but you'd probably like to have more than one even after your party.

I've never bought one but I would think they'd be cheaper the longer they've been a smoker. The lungs are likely in worse shape.
