Need some insight from Pride member...

As has been stated, unless he's a music major, there really aren't Pride scholarships. There was a loophole a few years back that got a member an athletic scholarship, but she was an outstanding academic individual as well, so I'm sure she had in-roads into all sorts of money.

Now that being said, I marched alto 4 years, was a squad leader for my last 2, and majored in Aerospace Engineering. I had about $2k worth of general academic scholarships each semester, but the only money I got from the band was the meal money per diem on away trips, but I've heard even that money has been squeezed quite a bit since I was last there in 2005.

Oh, I also got this SWEET avatar pic from halftime at the Peach Bowl in 2002, so there's that.

But anyway, call the band office and talk to Judy Dooley. Super awesome lady, she can get you pretty much any info you need.

Well there ya go. Straight from the horses mouth. Also love seeing fellow saxophone players around here. :)

Just wish I was still a saxophone player. Way more fun than Aero, but I wouldn't be able to support my costs of living.

Once a sax player, always one. I play at church and playing for a couple friends weddings this summer.

Lol tell me about it. Composition student right here. But I'm working on my master at this point.

Coincidentally, I was originally a biomed engineering major.

Ha I didn't get too far into the program, but I was really interested in robotic prosthetic development. Mostly equations and drawings, not cutting people open :)

Equations and drawings are what I'm talking about. I could never do that or compose for that matter. My brain doesn't function analytically at all.

sorry for the blurry pic, but here is the new music building that would be finished by the time he goes to college.

That should give the architect kids next door something to stare at. My little sis just started dating an architect. I haven't met him yet, but I can smell pretentiousness from 300 miles away (or how ever far va tech is)

I dunno, man. I used to go study in the Art & Architecture building because the students in there were so focused. Those "architorture" students had cots in that building b/c of the long hours. They kind of earn the right to take a bit of pride in their degrees, you know?

1allvol,
Mostly in your same boat. I have a jr, trumpet player, who's in love with marching band. I'm looking for info on the Pride, too. We've contacted the band phone number and they were very helpful. My son wants to be an Aerospace Engineer and has the grades and hopefully will have the test scores to get some academic schollies. Also, there's always the Hope, are you out of state?

We are Tennessee residents and are banking on some help from the lottery scholarships, and he is going to be a music major so are looking in to some opportunities there as well.

Thanks for the info. He played ball for a few years when he was younger, and of course i dreamed of the day like most fathers, that i would be sitting in Neyland watching him play, when he decided football wasnt for him and really got into music i was slightly disappointed, but i am just as excited now at the thought of sitting in Neyland watching him play with the POTSMB...and proud that he wants to be a part of such a fine tradition.

Not a pride member but I recommend thinking about your time, engineering takes up a lot of time and so does band, it will be hard but not impossible to balance both, I'm currently an engineering major.

Agreed, but trust me, if I did it, ANYONE can do it.

I did too. At one of the tables in the atrium. It was great.

I work in the Aerospace industry. I got my BSME at UT though. I work in the structural design side of things.

I was in the Pride for 2 years in 80 and 81 until classes interfered :) with the long hours in Interior Design/ Architecture. I am sure that there were scholarships for music majors back then, but not for the standard marching band member. Played for a few basketball games as well. No money, but they really took good care of us on the away games and bowl trips. I did not have to purchase a higher quality instrument , but I played the piccolo rather than a saxophone or pricier instrument. Dr Julian was quite the task master back then, before he mellowed out-- and in 1980 I think he was a little mellower than in the past.
Money aside, it was really an experience I would not trade for anything. There is absolutely not too many things that can compare with being down on the field when the team runs thru the T.

Julian isn't what he used to be but I respect the hell out of him.

That being said I think Sousa being a joke goes beyond just it alumni. He got drilled in the local music community for his infamous "b student" comments he made when the pride was down a couple years back.

Is Doc still alive? That man was an evil, old cuss when I marched in the early '90's. He retired while I was there. I respected the hell out of him, but to this day, I'm 95% certain he had no soul, lol.

Since he's talking about finding the money to send his kid to college, I'm assuming you're offering free lessons? :)

That is such a cool thing for you to do.

If you talked to Dr. Julian today you'd think he was a sweet man. Sadly his health has declined quite a bit.
