I don’t care the matchup. If we don’t win first game then just expect the Vols to lose 2nd round in big dance.
Right now, we are kinda in preseason mode with style/rotation. We gotta get it right before the big dance

Ole Miss or MSU will have to beat us with the 3 ball because we have too much depth and length down low. I envision a competitive game vs Mizzou to set up a rematch with Bama.

Can we just skip the SECT and just get to the NCAAT already? Personally, I'd like to see us play our backups and walk ons and get the hell outta there as early as possible. Our only shot at any success in the NCAAT will be our defense. Best at that when we're rested and healthy. The SECT threatens both those things. And as last year shows, the SECT doesn't mean a damned thing to the committee. Maybe losing in the first round of the SECT drops us to a 4 seed, but does it really matter that much considering our current roster/situation? I'd argue that it doesn't. Just a way for the league to make more money but even the way it's scheduled puts our conference at a bit of a disadvantage. I'd much rather be operating with a full tank for the NCAAT so I won't mind if we just take one on the chin Thursday and head to the house.

I feel better about the SEC tourney than the NCAA tournament.
With a little luck, we could do well in the conference tournament.
But every UT team Barnes has taken to the NCAA tourney has lost to a lower-seeded team.
I hope we can fix that this time around.

2 ways to look at it.... SEC is just that deep and we got dealt some unlucky hands in conference play (the two buzzer beaters) and against other conferences minus the top half of the Big12, we should be able to compete / outtalent them.

Those are good points about getting rest. Personally, I want the games in the SECT to work out our kinks at PG or at least for the team to become more comfortable in their new roles... Also, not to be sanctimonious, but I love to watch our VOLS and want to win every damn time we take the field/court and would be thrilled to get revenge against Mizzou, beat those felonious punks at Bama, then beat those damn Wildcats for the championship.

This is absolutely true.

The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee only pays attention to conference tournaments as they pertain to teams earning automatic bids, by winning their tournament, who would not have received an at-large-bid.

There is nothing to indicate that the results of conference tournaments have an influence on how teams are seeded at all.

As a fan, I tend to be terrified of overconfidence, but I don’t think it’s overstepping at all to say our worst game beats Miss St or Ole Miss.

Tennessee is 2-6 against Mississippi all time in the Southeastern Conference basketball tournament.

Getting bounced by Mississippi in the first rounds of the 1980 and 1981 tournaments were painful after winning the 1979 SECT. It was stupid to let Elston Turner go to Mississippi and it bit Devoe in the butt.

Did DeVoe not recruit Turner out of Austin East?

I don’t think that Mears worked too hard to sign Turner. Bertelkamp was essentially playing the same position and was only one year older. Plus after the A-E and Fulton riot in Stokely less than a decade before, I doubt that the administration was too enthusiastic about signing an A-E player. Rupert Breedlove was signed a few years earlier, but that didn’t work out at all. But for whatever reason Elston wasn’t a Vol, it was a major miss. One of the biggest missed opportunities in program history. It did work out well for Mister Turner however. He was a great player for OM and had an 8 year career in the NBA.

You have a point, no way we could beat Kansas or Texas :)

We need to right our ship and show we can win a couple games before the NCAAT

Yes earlier in the season. But I'm not sure this team is able to get into a high scoring affair with either of those. With that said, I'm comfy with this team being in the 50-70 range with point production considering how deep and long our defense is.

What kind of magic do we have exactly concerning the 1st game? Is it just because theyll be the lowest seed we'll prob face?

I honestly wouldn't mind losing gm 1 or 2 and have more time for the staff to implement an NCAAT scheme to turn this around. The SECT is just redundant anway. Give us 2 or 3 more OOC games please and dump this tourney.

Your knowledge of Vol Basketball lore is encyclopedic.

I’ve never heard of the AW-Fulton riot. I’m going to be digging for the goods on this.
