Need to win first tourney game

Getting bounced by Mississippi in the first rounds of the 1980 and 1981 tournaments were painful after winning the 1979 SECT. It was stupid to let Elston Turner go to Mississippi and it bit Devoe in the butt.
Can’t imagine the great Don Devoe making a bad decision

Can we just skip the SECT and just get to the NCAAT already? Personally, I'd like to see us play our backups and walk ons and get the hell outta there as early as possible. Our only shot at any success in the NCAAT will be our defense. Best at that when we're rested and healthy. The SECT threatens both those things. And as last year shows, the SECT doesn't mean a damned thing to the committee. Maybe losing in the first round of the SECT drops us to a 4 seed, but does it really matter that much considering our current roster/situation? I'd argue that it doesn't. Just a way for the league to make more money but even the way it's scheduled puts our conference at a bit of a disadvantage. I'd much rather be operating with a full tank for the NCAAT so I won't mind if we just take one on the chin Thursday and head to the house.

I was about to post almost exactly the same sentiment. Only upside I can see is to find the right rotations prior to going into tourney.

I can’t remember a more bipolar season than this one. Ranked as high as 2, beat Kansas, Alabama, Texas. Lost to Colorado, both games to Kentucky, at Florida, at Vandy, Mizzou at home. Different guys had monster games then disappeared. Injuries on top of it all. Just a weird season.

The Turner recruitment and signing was actually just prior to Devoe. But Elston took it out on Don. I don’t know about the regular season, but 2 one and dones in the SECT must have been sweet for Elston versus his hometown school.

I’ve never heard of the AW-Fulton riot. I’m going to be digging for the goods on this.

It’s been scrubbed quite well from being published on the internet. It was around 1970 - possibly a state high school tournament game. The folding chairs inside of Stokely were projectiles. The glass around the concourse was broken in the trophy cases (all of the trophies used to be on display there - Bowl games, etc) and from other places. It was ugly.

Edit: per @cpavol it was a regional tournament game between A-E and Fulton in 1971.

Edit: it looks like Turner/Mississippi split with TN in the regular season in each of Turner’s 4 years. Including the year (1977-78) with Cliff Wettig as TN’s interim coach. The home team lost at least half of them.

They used to set life size photos of the players on plywood and they were displayed in the front lobby of Stokely back in the day, the riot resulted in damage to several of these cut outs, one of the stories was one of the Tennessee players grabbed his cut out and carried it to safety that night. The Tennessee facilities haven't housed a high school post season event since then, occasionaly being used for preseason jamborees from time to time.

Wow! Thanks for the info. I’m really surprised I didn’t know about that.
