NegaVols Spin?

I have no problem whatsoever taking ownership for the statements that I've made,.....

Good to hear you say that. Here are a few.....

It sounds much worse than last year to me. I've heard about a piss poor offensive line that doesn't do a good job of run or pass blocking. I've heard about wide receivers dropping a lot of passes. Last year we never heard about the wide receivers dropping passes in practices and scrimmages. We heard nothing except how great our wide receivers were right up until the point that they proved to all of us that in an actual game they couldn't catch a cold. I've heard about a lack of depth on the defensive line. I've heard about Ainge continuing to look shaky in practices and scrimmages, yet still being the best option available. When you combine those things with an unproven group of linebackers and a secondary that all of you seem to think is great despite the fact that it's basically the same group (minus the best player) that got shredded by even some mediocre passing teams last year, I'm concerned.
:birgits_giggle:

Hell, in the past few years, you'd hear nothing from practices and scrimmages other than "the defense looked great" or the "offense looks fantastic". Even those statements don't really tell you anything because maybe your defense looked great because you offense played like crap, or your offense dominated because your defense sucked. You usually can't tell a whole lot until you actually line up against another team's players. However, dropped balls by wide receivers in practices and scrimmages are usually just indications that your wide receivers are terrible, particularly when that was the wide receiver corps' MO last year too.
:nono:

This year, I predict we'll lose to California, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Alabama.

The only thing I can say I didn't like, is I wish they let Ainge get 300 yards, but that's not a big thing. Better than a seperated shoulder.

I have no problem whatsoever taking ownership for the statements that I've made, but I have NEVER said that this team has no talent. What I have said is that no matter how talented our players may be, that talent hasn't been showing up on the field in games. That changed in a big way today.
Yes you did. You said there had been a tremendous drop off in talent over the past few years. You argued with me about NFL contributors, remember?

I argued that the talent hadn't been coached up. You said something to the effect that Cutcliffe couldn't turn them around and alluded to the idea that there wasn't enough talent there to turn around.

The Vols played a complete game today up until the point that the starters were pulled out in the third quarter. They executed well in every phase of the game, and we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot with stupid mistakes and penalties. The offensive playcalling was excellent and kept Cal's defense off balance. I felt that we should have left the starters in longer, but it was good to get the other players some game experience. There is no way to possibly spin this game as a negative. This was a fantastic effort.
You are right about that. It may or may not be the start of a great season but this one game was very good.

I especially loved the line play. They weren't dominant on every play. But I would say well above average considering that Cal played 8 in the box most of the day and they led a 200+ rushing charge. I don't recall Ainge even being touched.

As exciting as the big plays were, the thing that is giving me the most satisfaction is that the D front 7 and O-line both beat Cal.

Especially the o-line since Cal's front 7 were supposed to absolutely dominate UT.

This team showed more discipline today than I have seen UT show in a long, long time. Cutcliffe certainly seems to have made a major impact in that area. I hope they sustain that level of discipline throughout the rest of the season.
Amen and amen. Discipline, execution, attention to detail... the difference between winners and losers.

You are either attributing something that somebody else said in that thread to me, or you assumed that I was making an argument that I never made. I have never said that this team didn't have talent. I have said that this team has been poorly coached, and over the past few years it has been poorly coached. The addition of Cutcliffe to the coach staff has brought about a lot of changes in this team.

My argument about the number of UT players in the NFL is that UT's coaching staff has not been doing a good job of developing talent. As a result, the number of UT's players entering the NFL has decreased significantly over the past four years.

This thread began in the most negative way possible. Why is it that whenever a post comes along someone flips out about Negavols ruining the board? Yet, here is a thread asking for Negavol opinions. Jeez. The Vols won. I think after last season we all deserve to just enjoy it.

Those of us that aren't doom and gloom, deserved to handle things our way too this off season, and we had to deal with the NegaVols and all of their Fulmer bashing threads.

They can learn to cope with one thread after a great game that they weren't expecting.

2 of Ainge's touchdowns were the work of Meachem. They were 5 yard out/curl patterns and Meachem did the rest. Ainge threw a bad ball to an open Lucas Taylor. I dont really care about the INT. If Taylor hadn't tipped it, it wouldn't have been intercepted.

The things I did like about Ainge is that he didnt try and do too much. Cutcliffe had Ainge working very efficiently. He threw a perfect ball to Swain even tho he was pretty much wide open.

I want to see Ainge against a good secondary before I'm totally sold on him.
Ainges best pass of the night was not one of the TD's (all very good), but it was the one to Chris Brown when Cal had 8 or 9 on the line.

These people that have been deemed "Negavols" have done nothing but bash this team all off-season. I don't see anything wrong with making them eat their crow. Honestly, if you've done nothing but be a negative jerk since November, no you DON'T deserve to enjoy this win.

That's not true. If we had been satisfied with last season and not made coaching changes, I think we could expect an offense similar to 2005. If that were the case, we may not have won the game. Regardless of how you feel or felt, all Vol fans deserve to enjoy a Vol victory.
