Never short sale the impact of baseball

It wasn’t a discussion about Kentucky. It was a discussion about the championship game. Kentucky was an even matchup, so of course there are doubts whenever we play them. A&M didn’t stand a chance against us.
You have to win the game in front of you to get to the championship game to win. It’s a tournament, not one game to win the championship. I’m not try to argue baseball over basketball or football. But no other UT sports stands as tall as baseball at this particular moment. What was Basketball, a number 3 seed? What is baseball? That should help you with this simple question!

We all know Tennessee deserved a 2 seed in March Madness. It’s all political whenever it comes to seeding that tournament.

So you believe the number one seed for UT Baseball was political? Or that our basketball team deserved the number one seed? I think you’ve answered the question, so this is kind of rhetorical.

You can choose to believe it or not but everyone knows that March Madness is a huge money maker for the NCAA, so they are going to seed teams for storylines and and ratings vs how they actually should seed teams. If you truly believe Kentucky deserved a 2 seed over us then idk what to tell you. I never said they deserved a 1 seed. The baseball NCAAT is nowhere near the monster that March Madness so usually teams are seeded how they should be.

Vol fans were starving for a winner, a championship. Along came the baseball team last year and while they didn’t win the SEC or CWS, getting there was an accomplishment fans could be proud of. Then MBB wins the SECT, again, something to be proud of. Now BaseVols have taken a giant step. Winning is an attitude and it’s back in Knoxville v

Here's a question. Is it time to move baseball up in the VN forum list? It's below Around the NCAA...
Freak has answered this question before. The placement of the forum slots is based upon the activity in that particular forum. If you notice the numbers out to the side, it shows where this form is in relationship via number of post to the others. I know, because I asked the same question a couple.of years ago. Hope this helps.

I will say those dudes on the basketball loved each other like brothers but there’s clearly a gap in production whenever comparing the two. The baseball team has been ranked number #1 for practically the entire SEC slate for a reason. But to say you can’t recall another sports program at UT looking like they belong in an SEC Championship is just wrong. The basketball team won the SECT by 15 points and lead by as many as 18. They also hadn’t won the thing in my lifetime. How soon people forget…

OK, I learned a long long time ago that telling people that they are wrong for their own opinion is very much out of bounds. You can agree or disagree with anyone's opinion however, to tell someone they are WRONG for an opinion is just plain old incorrect. I have been a Volunteer fan for 50+ years and everyone is entitled and encouraged to express their opinions.

Go Vols!!

I didn’t tell someone they were wrong for an opinion, but rather they must have simply forgotten the basketball and soccer teams dominated their championships this season. Winning by 15 points in basketball is dominating. Winning by 3 goals is dominating. That is factual. I don’t call people out for opinions. We are all entitled to opinions, but to say that this team is the first one in a long time that looked like they belonged in a championship is factually incorrect.

In my 10 years of posting on VN, I have never had an argument with a fellow Vol. However, we seem to be at an impasse VolPack. In my original thread reply on here, this is what I stated: I cannot remember the last UT Team (of any sport) that looked like they belonged in an SEC Championship Game. This is an opinion, my opinion. This is based upon the swagger that I feel this team exudes - which is 100% subjective. I never said it was about statistics and Ws & Ls. These amazing kids owned Hoover. Their teamwork, coaching, individual moxie and team moxie was something that I do NOT recall seeing in any UT team since perhaps our football NC and or some of Pat Summit's teams.

My goodness, all I wanted to do was give credit where credit was due and provide a personal observation about our current Vol Baseball Championship Team. Now that my friend, IS factual!!!!!!!!! GBO! On to Omaha!

We will just agree to disagree on this matter. Sorry you feel the way that you do.

I cannot remember the last UT Team (of any sport) that looked like they belonged in an SEC Championship Game. These Baseball Vols are special to the Nth degree.

Congrats UT Baseball Team and Coaching Staff. You've stirred up a lot of passion and fire that has been doused for decades. Proud to be a Vol!!

If you had said….. I cannot remember the last UT Team (of any sport) “that I had seen” that looked like they belonged in an SEC Championship Game…..would have made more sense.

But your comment opened the door for debate because @VolPack22 and others have their own opinion too, it’s how message boards work.

MadVols and VolPack: I am but a young neophyte and seldom poster on VN compared to you two. I am a UT graduate, one of three in my family (brother was a pitcher at UT in early 70s) and a Vol fan since I was growing up in the 60s. The last thing I want to do is to come into your playground and not play by your rules - which I was totally blind to until my recent post. I gave an opinion, and my opinion on the current Vol baseball team has been torn to shreds. It was a positive post. I am not a troll. I despise Bama, Gators and Dawgs. I love Pat Summit, Peyton, Reggie, Bernie & Ernie, Tee Martin, Cobb/Webb, Jason and many other VFLers. And. I also know that if I or anyone comes on VN and is negative, they quickly can earn the status of NegaVol.

I am proud to be a Vol and soooo very proud of the BaseVols! I also hope that my personal opinions (which I highlighted in orange below) and those of every other VN poster are simply respected. You are more than welcome to agree or disagree, but please, don't tell someone that their opinion is wrong. Agree, or disagree. Thanks for understanding. I cannot remember the last UT Team (of any sport) that looked like they belonged in an SEC Championship Game

I know I wasn’t addressed specifically, but I’ll weigh in. I have somewhat avoided this particular subthread as I have respect for most of @VolPack22 and @mad4vols opinions. Without speaking to diving/swimming or soccer, as I follow neither closely,

I did closely follow the roundy ball team, and certainly felt they were worthy to be considered as potential champions. Did they have the same level of dominance over the field in their tournament? I’d agree with your thesis somewhat and answer no. Did the bb team slap TAMU down in the Championship Final? Absolutely. In dominant fashion. Were there serious expectations that Barnes and the team would hoist a trophy as NCAA Champions? Not so much, imo.

That points to culture and expectations based on prior experience. I really think Barnes’ focus may be on building successful young men of high character. Basketball sometimes seems secondary. Sorry, wandering off topic.

Regarding the BaseVols, they have been without question statistically dominant on a national level this year, not just at the SEC level, and yet only won their Championship Final by three runs. Florida was in it until the last out. That has more to do with the nature of beisbol though. Do we all have expectations that the BaseVols can make a tournament run to the top at Omaha? Count me in on that one! It seems you may have an affinity for this team, more so possibly than the other Champions recently. Which is fine, as I seem to feel that also. I would respectfully disagree that they are the only recent SEC Champion that looked the part.

The road to Omaha will separate the chaff. I would agree with something along the lines of the greatest UT team across all sports in recent memory, without denigrating our other accomplishments.

Hope you stick around and continue to contribute. If nothing else you inspired me to bring a long winded take! 😎

I think this opinion is a bit crazy and it is all coming down to the definition of "looks like they belong". I take that as they compete, don't look out of place and have a chance to win. I believe the definition is being set at a way higher standard of crushing your opponent like the baseball team is doing. I don't think this is realistic. I watch basketball and I was at the SEC basketball tournament. Our team this year absolutely belonged. We were 1 game from winning the SEC regular season. That was a good team that got plenty of media love/confirmation.

They belonged.

I still shake my head a the fact that the only two (official) hires that John Currie made were both homeruns (pun intended): CTV and Chris Woodruff (men's tennis). Just crazy.
He really only has two mistakes on his resume as an AD.

1) Driving Frank Martin to leave Kansas State for a lesser job

2) Schiano at UT

But those are whoppers.

Steve Forbes could end up saving his reputation though.

He will never recover from the Schiano debacle, but he seems to be doing well at WF. I completely forgot about the Martin fiasco.

Although it took Fulmer burning the AD's office to the ground to elicit real change, I'm glad we went outside the UT family for a new AD--we needed to clean out the Dickey/Hamilton/Hart lifers.
