Neverending MBRO memory thread

I'm tired! My dad and buddy are driving down in the morning, so we can all go see the other buddy in the hospital

- I’ll add that AVL city schools don’t begin until Aug 26, and last day is June 6. WTFT is going on with these schools that begin in early August? That’s just nuts.

2 Factors - tl;dr - I present the calendar to the board every year and have to answer these questions.

#1 Testing Windows. If a system is on a 90-min block system and changes classes at Christmas, it's damn near impossible to split the yr into 90 day-90 day semesters. The earlier you start in August, the more instructional time that semester for required state-based testing.

The alternative to above is starting later, get a calendar, count days 1,2,3,4,literally, allow for holidays labor day and thanksgiving...now your option is to do testing after having the kids back for a week after holidays.

#2 Dual-enrollment. Starting early August allows better coordination with the colleges, esp in terms of deadlines, grades due...which is even more important bc we have kids (i think maybe joes and tfgs) finishing their associates degree in high school

#3 and not as huge a factor--spring breaks must be coordinated based on testing schedule deadlines from the state for elementary, middle, and non-block hs students.

OK, I see that. I checked our published calendar, and HS semester exams are Jan 13-17, with a full week of classes beforehand.

My schools had this schedule back when I road my brontosaurus to school, including the first run or two through college. The world kept on turning. (Definitely more awkward for college.)

My university fall semester runs Aug 19 through end of November, with exams first week of December.

I get mandated # of attendance days, but school in almost the entire month of August is terrible, especially in the heat waves we are now experiencing.

The thing to look at is for the mandated state tests.
A lot of systems on a traditional (say) 7-period schedule for the entire year do not change classes entirely. Those mandated state tests would be in the spring, starting usually in April or May.
Most systems around here use the "block": four 90-minute classes per day for half the year, then all new classes. In that case, the mandated state tests need to be in November and in April or May.
