"Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The Birmingham News.

Interesting choice of words in his inauguration speech. Is it right for a politician to make speeches like this? Do you feel he can govern all people in his state without prejudice or without trying to convert?

I have no idea why he felt the need to bring up the subject. I guess as long as he talks about Christianity its ok though. The guy is a moron.

Probably should have kept that private. I'm not sure there are a ton of uber liberals down there to raise much of a stink about it though. The national media will probably crucify him for it.

Maybe he should pick the New Testament and give it a more thorough read.

he was referring to the Bible when it talks about being a brother and sister in Christ.

If I'm a pastor that counts my "saves" I'm headed to Abalama's death row today. Those would be can't lose converts.

my view is that he is there to govern alabama and not to worry about people's religious beliefs. I understand he's a Christian but that really has nothing to do with why you have the position

VDaddy is right. He is pandering. There is no sincerity in pandering.

Before he gets too far down the evangelical road, I think he should know that Nick Saban cusses.

I didn't keep up with it, but did he reflect this during his campaign?

What's it matter? You think any person running for Gov of alabama would get elected if they didn't claim to be a Christian? Saving the state money and getting people working again should be his focus

Just curious. Would take Voldads post from possible to more possible. IMO

Most inaugural speeches have remarks that have nothing to do with the issues of the state, city, nation...doesn't mean his sole focus is on that. Didn't read his entire remarks, but if that was all he said I would agree.

true but I don't see the point in stuff like that. It just doesn't help anything especially in the oh so tolerant state of alabubba

Some answers to some questions in this thread.

1. He ran entirely on jobs - his particular hook was that he would not take any pay for being governor until Alabama returns to full employment (he's a retired MD)

2. Virtually every Alabama politician is Christian and makes some mention of it. I do agree though that this statement is strong for an inaugural speech.

3. He was the better choice of 2 bad choices for Gov. He beat the best choice in the primary.

it is amazing to see the anger you guys show when someone openly talks about Christianity in a respectful way.

how is it respectful to anyone who is not a Christian? Also what does it have to do with his primary role as governor?
