New Basketball Staff Member - Houston Fancher

Probably knew he was on the way out or just part of a loosing program. Also, Tennessee seems to be a great stepping stone towards a better job. If CBP keeps pumping out big wins, NCAA runs, and eventually a title, then good things will happen for his assitants. Also, Tony Jones may be leaving sometime soon, so that could prove for promotions for the rest of his staff.

One good comment from the article on this guy is that he helped improve academic progress. That can't be a bad thing.

"In addition to their success on the court, Fancher’s squads also were presented with NCAA Public Recognition Awards in 2005-06 and 2006-07. The NCAA Public Recognition Awards honor programs that rank among the nation’s top 10 percent in their sport in Academic Progress Rate scores. The ASU men’s basketball program fell just hundredths of a percentage point shy of receiving the recognition for a third consecutive year in 2007-08."

Who under Pearl is an example of this?

Who under Pearl is an example of this?

A lot of Iowa fans wanted Forbes as their new head coach. I believe Jones has been sought after by some smaller schools. He was the top recruiter on the team. Waiting for the right school from the right conference to come along.

Technically doesn't someone have to take another job to make it a stepping stone?

That's usually how it works.

In pearl's defense a lot of his lower tier assistants have moved on to better jobs elsewhere even if forbes and jones have not had a head coaching gig.

Aaron Green to Oak Ridge High School?

I'm not trying to criticize BP, I just don't know of any of his assistants that have used being his his assistant as a stepping stone to a better job.

I wouldn't call some fans of a school wanting Forbes as proof.

Scott Edgar actually left to become head coach at SEMO. We can argue whether an assistant coaching job here is better than that, but he did leave for a promotion if you will which was my original intent in the post.

Granted it didn't excactly work out well for him there.

Didn't Tony Jones accept a head coaching position but later decided to stick with Tennessee? That would qualilfy as "Name One"

Yeah - I couldn't remember all the details myself.
But I would say he could count as someone who had the opportunity to land a head coaching job

And that is for a reason. A lot of Bruce's assistants are not very good. Forbes is a waste of money and Tony Jones is only a recruiter

Trust me. I was involved with the program last year. I personally thought Jason Shay was the best actual assistant, but don't think he was a good recruiter.

Just never thought Forbes brought much to the table at all. Jones was on the road a lot for recruiting and was rarely to be seen towards the early parts of the fall and beginning of the season. Shay was very involved especially during pre-season workouts and was a huge part of our improvement on the defensive side of the ball.
