This is not intended to be argumentative. I am just not completely up to date about what is going on.

1) Does he not have a 1st amendment right to his own religion?

2) Does he not have a 1st amendment right to freedom of speech?

3) Is he advocating any unacceptable positions as a government agent?

No. He does not have a First Amendment right to express, as a teacher, religious points of view in a classroom.

The facebook thing is lame, but that's not the issue, for me.

As in the sense of trying to emulate Christ and his teachings? I didn't get the impression that he was referring to the deity aspect, which is the only issue I would take with him.

That's not what he said. He's baiting people into making him a martyr. Needs counseling, imo.

I assume the bold is his actual comments.
Buell also likened himself to Jesus Christ on his classroom Web page saying that he tries to "teach and lead my students as if Lake Co. Schools had hired Jesus Christ himself."

Unless there is more of his comments somewhere else (that are strictly pertaining to Jesus Christ and him), his comments sound pretty similar to what I posted earlier.

I would stick with the law/constitutional end of it, if your looking to rail. Im not sure you grasp the other enough and going off his comments it would strictly be opinion unless there are more quotes past this story.

Why not? If some atheist can teach his pov and call it science, why can a religionist not teach his pov as part of social studies? It is impossible to separate history from religion. Religion motivates and explains. Even if your religion is atheism or humanism. If a devout jew is forced to take a science class that contradicts his beliefs and basically tells him he is wrong and his religion is wrong, how is that different from someone saying 'I am a believer and if you don't believe, then you are wrong.'

(now, I am not advocating teaching religion in public school, I am against it. I just think it is one of the fundamental problems in public education and that is education and religion are inseparable, but that is a whole other debate.)

I took a world religion class - so it's offered.

In my experience, most history profs don't separate the two - they teach the basics but don't get into the detail that a religion class would - which makes sense.

I think people look down on preaching in schools - most teachers educate - preaching is different.
