Let's say we get one of these big name hires. A proven winner with actual ability. Should we consider it a rebuilding year or expect to show up and compete for the East in Year One?

With the current situation and from what we've seen this year....there's not a single gimme on that list. On the other hand a "New Coach" would probably be happy with that list for re-building. Don't forget what even Saban had in his first year with Bama.

No. It would clearly be rebuilding. Under those circumstances, the best we could hope for would be 7 wins. 6 would be likely.

Nope. With the new coach not being hired until the end of the year, he should get a year 0 right? :eek:lol:

It's only fair!!

I know it was sarcasm but many people will seriously believe this. No year 0 unless there's tons of attrition from the coaching change, an entirely new D and O, or the hire takes place just before or after signing day (and results in a bad class). Than I could see a year 0 granted.

If it's a proven winner I'd be ok with giving him longer than I did Dooley but my expectation for an upset occasionally would be higher.

I won't call it year 0 though. Never liked that term.

I see 5-5 with two games I can't decide on for 2013. Missouri and Vandy are a toss up for me right now. At best, 7-5.

I do expect the recruiting class to be in rough shape time a new HC is named. I also expect 4-6 guys to leave for the draft. Alot of people feel we are in alot better shape now, I am not one of those people. I think the new HC will be in for a rough start no matter who it is.

if our O stays and we get a D minded coach i think we could compete with anyone but we need d to be able to ompet sad when you avg more than 40 points and game and the d gives up 45 a game

I'm talking Kiffin attrition and a class out of the top 50. I think we are definitely better off. Roster is better, not a ton, but better. New facility is built. Hamilton is gone and it appears that the powers that be are willing to spend some major cash.

Auburn will have a new coach as will. With different staffs, it's probably a toss up . Who knows about Bray and CP? Hunter is gone IMO.

I see for next year a 5-7 record just as the same for this year. That's with all the same players returning under this same coach...no progress as a team.

I will believe the powers that be are willing to spend some cash when they actually do it. It would not shock me at all to see Kirby Smart hired. UT has never shown they will pony up for a top HC.

Oregon, Florida, Georgia, USC, and Bama are sure losses. A good quality hire should be able to upset at least one of them.

If we hire an SEC caliber coach, along with high-caliber assistants... and if we keep a decent recruiting class... and if a couple of key players decide to forego the NFL for another year at UT (i.e., Bray and Patterson), I see the following results (though I HOPE they are better):

Austin Peay.................. W
Western Kentucky........ W
@ Oregon..................... L
@ Florida...................... L
U of South Alabama...... W
Georgia......................... L
U South Carolina........... L (I do not like Spurrier, but he seems to always find a way to beat us)
@ Bama....................... L
@ Mizzou..................... L (toss up... will they be healthy?)
Auburn........................ W (toss up... a lot depends on their new HC)
Vandy......................... W
Kentucky..................... W

That would give UT a 6 - 6 record, at worst, and bowl eligible. However, it is possible that we could end up 8 - 4, or better (and we get into a higher quality bowl game) if we get a few breaks (which comes from good coaching and player execution) and players remain healthy.

Hopefully we can keep some of the coaches on this staff namely the running back coach and even our OC. The running game has really come around this season and we have put enough points on the board in most games to win. Who would have thought that our defense would regress this much in just one year. I had no idea and the defense is the reason we are 4 and 6.

I'm amused by so many people ready to make predictions for next year when nearly 100% of us were dead wrong in our predictions about this year.

If Dooley isn't fired today or at least tomorrow, I'm beginning to think that he will be here next year. Unthinkable, yes; impossible, no.

Next year will not be pretty regardless of the coach. The roster will be depleted with the departure of seniors and several skill position players leaving early.

An early guesstimate would be 7-5. A lot depends on the coach and what players leave/stay
