New Coach at Kansas is....

Again, where's the objective evidence? A college student telling me "its a good hire because I say so" doesn't do anything for me. The numbers on paper don't add up for me, so is there any independent expert analysis, or quotes from reputable peers, or something meaningful?

Until something comes up, I'll consider it a shot in the dark by Kansas and hope it works out well for all parties involved. I do like it when people succeed.

Entering his fourth season, head coach Turner Gill has lifted the Buffalo football program from a one-win program to Mid-American Conference Champions. On December 5, 2008 the Bulls defeated 12th-ranked and undefeated Ball State to win the MAC Championship for the first time in school history.

Gill led the Bulls to their first ever bowl game when they played Connecticut in the 2009 International Bowl.

Gill was named the MAC Coach of the Year by The Sporting News and was named a finalist for the Paul Bear Bryant College Football Coach of the Year Award.

During the 2007 season, Gill earned Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bulls to five wins. UB finished with a 5-3 conference record, including a 4-2 mark in the MAC East Division to claim a share of the regular season title.

Does anyone else wonder where all the love is coming from with Tuner Gill? I don't have anything against the guy, but his record at Buffalo was less than impressive. He had one season just above 500. Here are his records for the 4 years he was there. 2-10, 5-7, 7-5, 5-7. Not that impressive, however I wish him well.

Have any of you guys badmouthing Gill's record actually LOOKED at the history of Buffalo football prior to Gill's arrival?

Let's take a look:

1978 - 1992: Division III: Produces three winning seasons of football in 15 seasons played
1993 - 1998: Division I-AA: One winning season in six seasons of football played, otherwise averaging two or three wins per season
1999 - Present: Division I-A: Prior to the arrival of Gill, quite possibly the worst program in the division, failing to produce more than one win four times in seven seasons

Then in comes Gill and wins a conference title in three seasons.

Let's interpret this: Buffalo was not just one of the worst teams in D-IA. Buffalo has historically been among the worst football programs EVER in the history of the THOUSANDS of programs of NCAA and NJCAA football.

Turner Gill brought them a conference title in three years. Obviously, whether or not he can live up to the accomplishments of a guy like Mangino in a place like KU has yet to be seen. He may very well fail. But to say he hasn't accomplished anything is totally incorrect and flat-out indicates ignorance of the landscape and history of college football.
