This is what I heard happened.

Hamilton was seriously interested in hiring Cutcliffe. Unlike the Kiffin/Pearl hires, the football hire was all on Hammy because of the short time period.

When the boosters heard Hammy was going to interview Cutcliffe, they said "Hell to the no" and that was that.

He can hold the band together and steady the ship for the next few years and then go back to the league if thats what he wants; Then we can hire a big name or just bring Bruce back!!

It was close enough that his staff was contacting friends in Knoxville wanting to know if they could crash with them until the end of school year until the rest of the family would move.
