New Commitment for football

Yeah, def heard of him. Could end up being a great pickup. He is a kid who has the talent and no college recruiter doubted that. What they did doubt however was his size. His position is "playmaker" at the college level. He is a RB/WR/DB. Athlete in other words.

Ignore that I was thinking of someone else. Hawkins is 6'1, 190 lbs. He is a 3-star on rivals. The playmaker part is right though. He is a great athlete and good student. Where do you see that he committed? I can't find it anywhere.

Listed at 6'1, 190. As a junior, he rushed for 1,492 yards and 15 TD's.

I don't think it would, but I will tell you what will keep Creer from coming. 3 words: Foster, Hardesty, Coker. Creer wants to go to the place where he can play right away.....OK St is and has been his destination for a while.

It may be weird to some of you that we took his commitment just 2 and a half weeks before Creer planned to commit, but there is a reason. Hawkins was planning on committing to Kentucky this week so we scooped him up before they had a chance.

Email from govols.com

He's not listed on the scout.com prospects site nor on the scout.com UT prospects list. scout.com does suck sometimes.

That statement so sums up where we are right now.

If we're having to be proactive to keep players from going to Kentucky, the end is near.

So you wouldn't take Micah Johnson? Hawkins has been a guy we've been on the fence with for a while and this was a now or never situation. How many times have you watched Hawkins play?

zero. Please explain to me why is UT offering so many RBs? Is that a need position in this class? I just don't understand this one.

Okay, I've read a little more and it seems that this guy is very fast and there is a change he might be a DB. I guess it makes more sense to me now.

He was a player we've been evaluating and Creer wasn't gonna commit, sorry to burst everyone's bubble. Mo Williams hasn't listed us in a while and Dale Martin is as close to a lock to the Big 10 as possible. We want 1 RB in this class(remember we took Lindsey last year and he is off to JUCO). Look at what happened last year, Hardesty went down, Riggs went down and Foster was being relied on to do everything because we had noone behind him. We really only have 3 RBs on roster(Kemp is an athlete, Williams is an athlete, Anderson is a FB). We need one more for depth.

And he held offers from Kentucky, West Virginia(one of the hotter teams in the nation, though overrated) and Mississippi State. Our main other RB option is Dennis Rogan(Knoxville RB) but he has real academic issues. He has been offered by UM and VT though.

The conventional wisdom seems to be that if the Vols have a really good season there is a strong chance that some of the uncommitted 4-5* prospects will take a strong second look at UT. Does the fact that the staff is going ahead and doling out the scholarships without waiting to see what happens with some of the top prospects suggest that Fulmer & Co. may not have much faith in a big turnaround this year? Just thinking out loud.

I think they are playing it safe. Just because they have a good year doesn't mean that those players will be available. Hawkins isn't a bad player. Rob Lewis feels that while he will get his first shot at TB, the staff thinks he will end up at OLB.

I'm sure he is good and I'm not trying to slam anyone. It's just weird how we all read CPF's comments about being lied to by prospects and now all of the sudden the focus of recruiting seems to be off the highest of the highly rated kids. I just wonder what's going on. Is this a change in recruiting philosophy? Is the staff gunshy? Is the program "down" to the extent that no one should expect guys who are rated near the top for their positions to want to come here? All of the above?

I'd say the fact that we are coming off of a 5-6 year has a big effect on all of this. This is a great year instate, but the problem with that is that the recruiting services only have so many 4* and 5* ratings to give out and this state isn't one that will get many no matter how good the players are. This is a year that the staff will really have to work on evaluating sleepers. It is easy as a Pete Carroll or Mack Brown or Urban Meyer/Bobby Bowden/Larry Coker and just take your pick of 5* players in your backyard.

Here is a name for you. Ken Darby. He was an instate player with similar size and style. He was only 3* and had to wait on an offer from UAT but jumped on it when it arrived.

just compare UF's commit list and ours, then look a couple of years down the road and tell me where all this is headed

Josh plays at my old high school...and he's definately athletic. Not a bad student either. I actually work for the school system in Loudon as a substitute teacher and every time I've had him in class, he's been a real stand up kid as well...very respectful. I believe he rushed for like 1400 yards or something last year, including a 300 yrd performance against Lenoir City.

we played them. He wasnt as talented as Dustin Lindsay but is a great player with great speed. His problem was power because he is undersized.

From the film I have seen he is just as talented as Lindsay. He looks powerful. He did not go down on first contact and broke a number of tackles. He also seems to be one of those backs that are shifty and never seem to have a solid hit laid on them.
