I was going to take BPV's advice last year and get out of the Navy. The Navy instead gave me a job that I found rewarding and I stayed on and moved to Hampton Roads VA.

It looks like now, someone must have sh!t in Gate's Wheaties when he visits the area. 2nd fleet is now going to the chopping block, couple that with JFCOM being closed and this area will turn into the New Detroit.

Glad I bought a house here!

Ouch, that is going to be happening more and more I'm afraid, as large installations and the massive amounts of disposable income they bring turn local econom
ies into one trick ponies.

More and more towns will see this. Atlanta saw a complete gutting of military installations but being a large town was able to absorb the damage. An area like Norfolk and some others will just completely dry up.

I am not sure of an area as localized as we are that had a Command and a Fleet shut down? The speed they are doing it at is something I have never seen either.

As organizations, I can see them being put on the cutting block. But the functions they perform are indespensible. Are they being relocated somewhere else?

That's tough, man. My buddy's dad works at the Shipyard there, as does much of that town. That place will be a bigger mess than it already is without the military

2nd fleet does all the training for all overseas deployments. I would guess they will bust it up and move it to various commands. I can't fathom a scenario where new sailors would be placed on a ship with no training. OJT is the best possible way to learn but the core stuff has its place. I wouldn't send a Fire Control Tech to the fleet without some practice and theory on their weapons systems.

JFCOM needs some serious fat cut. The problem is the Star Command (which is not in Norfolk). Doing away with the entire Command vs trimming the fat will insure foreign militarys will surpass us. My guess is some other branch of service will absorb as much as they can, but it won't be here.

I have noticed a trend that all jobs seem to migrating to the DC area?

We are going the opposite way here in north alabama. BRAC is bringing about 5 major units to this base along with the USA Security Assistance Command(FMS). I am shocked that 2nd Fleet is getting axed. It will definitely hurt that local economy. Anyword on the impact it will have on Oceana?

Oceana barely survived the last BRAC. We are already planning on its closure.

On the flip side some of your ANG (Alabama) is moving to Mghee Tyson. Its probably going to see a pretty big boost.

I don't think this will have a direct impact on the shipyard.

I was at the Shipyard when Northrop Grumman (gates) purchased it from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry dock Company. Effectively keeping Electric Boat from buying it. I think with there contracts and repair services they will be fine?

At this point the shipyards are fine as the only ones on the East Coast capable of doing the jobs the Navy needs. On the other hand Norfolk is the only Fleet naval base on the Eastern side of the US so I am surprised they are trying to kill the area.

ship yard goes and I'm packing up and leaving. NN will be useless after that

I would have to talk to the guys down the hall but I think they are planning the ones in Suffolk?

Eustis is gone.

as a side job I have been helping people plan on their futures. My one bit of advice to them is move to where the jobs are. You would think I told them to jump in a hole and bury themselves, some people aren't going to leave.

it was speculated that Charleston, SC would dry up after the Navy closed it's base there, but that hasn't happened
