Did they ever reassign an Aircraft Carrier Group To Florida? I know it was a hot topic for a long time.

There was a carrier group there in the late 90's (USS JFK), I was on it. Shortly after I left I believe it went to Norfolk. The basin had (at the time) 2 carrier piers.

These cuts can't be close to the ones Clinton did when he was CINC across all branches. We were always undermanned and underfunded.

They aren't pulling out. It's just the organization of 2nd fleet that's on the choppong block, if I understand this right.

From the interviews I've seen with Sec. Gates, the objective is to cut down on the military's dependence on civilian contractors. That side of DOD has grown completely out of control and there will be realignment of infrastructure. I admire Gates for confronting a big problem and he is the only person with the credibility and cajones to confront the military-industrial complex.

I have always wanted to live by the ocean.

Really, though, why is the Navy pulling out?

Key word is reorganization.

In all reality JFCOM will just be renamed and reduced in size (J6 will be cut). 2nd fleet is going to merge under Fleet Forces Command. The speed in which it is being done is going to create havoc with people losing jobs and then those jobs will reopen either somewhere else or under a new command with someone else. Either way, people will lose jobs for a period of time.

I wanted that carrier moved because I have never thought it was a good idea to have the entire East Coast Navy in one port.

The Kennedy was stationed in Mayport some time ago as a reserve carrier.

The Kennedy was an active carrier that had TAR's, a common misconception. The overwhelming majority were regular active duty with some TAR's on it. We did 2 deployments to the gulf for Souther Watch and we also launched airstrikes in the Baltic War in the 3 years I was there. There were an unusually high number of USS America folks, almost as if the entire crew was transferred over to the Kennedy when it was decommed.

If you think outsourcing has been a big problem, just wait for the mess that is coming from gates plans. They have tried big insourcing and it didn't work for good reasons.

JFK became a reserve ship sometime in early 2002

Any attempt to change how the military does business will be messy and staunchly resisted. But it needs to be done. And Gates has said that all savings realized will be re-invested back to DOD. Imagine, trying to change the DOD culture while 2 wars are going on. It will be bumpy.
