New FDA Rule

“Busy shoppers will be able to go into grocery stores and have some easy to understand information on the front of packages giving them quick data on what is a healthier choice,” said Sebelius at the U.S. Capitol

Absoultely ridiculous. I didn't think this was a big deal, but after reading about the cost impact for companies to change labeling it is almost criminal they would mandate this if the above quote is the best reasoning they can come up with. What do they do over there...sit on the arse and think of new worthless crap to mandate so they feel important?

obama thinks we are all idiots

Most people are, and most of them are fat, too. I really don't see the big deal in this. As someone who always checks the nutritional info on packages, it will be nice to stop doing the pick and replace dance every time I am in the supermarket. Once I see some concrete numbers on cost I may change my tune, but moving a small panel to the front of the box doesn't seem like it would be too much of a burden.

Also like the idea of making companies prove something is a "healthy choice" before promoting it that way. Again, I can easily pick out the liars, but most people aren't as discriminating in the aisles as I am.

I think the next thing the FDA should do is prevent any corporation from showing pictures of food that doesn't actually reflect what you're paying for.

Next is the FDA should put warning labels on ice cream and other frozen treats that caution against eating too fast thus preventing "brain freeze".

Gotta be honest, I laughed.

I got news for you. Putting nutritional information on the front of a box isn't going to make one person who doesn't already care about nutrition all of a sudden health savvy. I know how big of an inconvenience to pick something up and look at it is for people.

When you are shopping for 150 dollars of stuff at a store next to a fairly upscale neighborhood, I can assure you that it is a pain in the ass to wait behind health conscious (albeit attractive) soccer moms as they pick up every box to check the sugar content. Its not the norm, and I am not claiming that my feelings on this aren't selfish, but again I don't see the big deal.
That said, I agree with your first point. Extremely unhealthy people aren't necessarily going to be swayed by front facing info. However, your average person may very well be hesitant to buy that bag of Cheetos when they realize that a serving will knock 4 years off their life expectancy.

a serving of cheetoh's will knock 4 years off your life expectancy?

damn, I must be a vampire or something because I've eaten enough cheetoh's in my lifetime to kill Elrond.

What? They're going to put labels on the front instead of the back? Damn you Obama!!!

Of course it will. Also, knowledge is power in food choices. Haven't you seen the terrible financial shape places like McDonald's are in? Or is it people just think that is health food?

I am a fan of hyperbole. The point stands though, most people can and will claim ignorance to the nutritional values of food until it is shoved in their face. Yes, it is their choice what they eat, however, I don't feel that attempting to educate them is a bad thing. I really do think this is simply not an issue.

Evidently it is a huge issue. Thus the federal regulation.

I meant the federal regulation is not an issue.

Then again maybe there will be red tanks at Kroger tomorrow morning, I don't know.

Of course not, they never are.

If so, hopefully there contents will be listed on the front of them.

even poor people have access to the internet and nutritional information can be found online easily.

the FDA is a typical gaggle of bureaucratic busybodies

This is why this is so laughable. We are in the information age and yet the government has to step in and make companies provide info like this. Why? I got a free app on my ipod that will pull up the nutritional information of every chain restaurant you could think of. This is nonsense, anyone that wants to know can know, easily.

But that's not the least bit practical, who is going to take two hours to research their whole grocery list? I mean, if you guys don't think nutritional facts should be required at all I can see your argument here, and I trust that some of you don't. However, it's simply moving a panel, and I am calling bull**** on companies saying it is going to break them to do that.

It's still not as efficient as having it on the front of the box. I will hold to that. Restaurants have books with nutrition info, too, for what its worth. I don't think they are included in this though, for obvious reasons.
