Another question for you smart folks..and by smart folks I mean Grand Vol..what the heck is China anyway? They sure as heck ain't idealistic commies no more. I guess they are just a bureaucratic oligarchy? That makes them a little less scary to me. That they are run by a bunch of bureaucrats, instead of a megalomaniacal despot.
They are communist, but allow a lot more of what seems like free market, but is state owned, sort of. It's way more liberal than what you consider "traditional" communists. It's called Socialist Market Economy:

Way it works, from my understanding, the state owns the factory, but the private businesses (Nike, The North Face, Dell, etc) contract through the factory for the goods made. It's kind of one of those things they don't really want to mess with since it's working for them and it keeps the Party coffers filled. They don't seem like the communists you see in movies and whatnot since they broke with the Soviets back in the 50s or 60s, don't remember when exactly.
Communism is an interesting form of government since it encompasses several different variations like Maoism, Marxism-Leninism, Stalinism, etc. It's like each new leader puts their own twist on the basic principles of communism and eventually gets branded as their own. So while one can say "communist" there are a bunch of different varieties.
Hong Kong is a utter and complete 180 from the normal Chinese model though since it was under British rule for a long time. And the Chinese certainly didn't want to mess up a good thing and left everything in place when the Brit rule ended.
