the clock will now start when the ball is kicked off on change of possesions, instead of when the ball is caught, and also i think the clock will start after time stoppages when the team huddles instead of when the ball is snapped....

on around the horn this afternoon, CPF was quoted as saying something to the affect he didn't like this rule and that it would eliminate up to 15 plays per game....

tim callishaw went on to say about CPF's comments, he needed to worry about winning games rather than how many plays would be in the game, otherwise he was going to get run out of Tennessee....kind of tounge in cheek, but anyway....

anybody have any thoughts on this rule change? I would think at first pass, this will benefit defenses across the board by speeding the game up, reducing offensive plays....

Why do you start a clock when a team goes into a huddle after a time stop, rather than when the ball is snapped. I can agree with the first rule over the latter.

Considering that they're making these rule changes because they think they game is too long, I don't like it. Want to make the games shorter without messing with the actual football?? Shorten the TV timeouts.

Right now, the game is getting shorter and the commercials are getting longer. Pretty soon we'll be watching commercials with football timeouts.

I agree. Running the clock while the team is huddled before the first play doesn't make much sense. I can understand starting the clock when the ball is kicked off, there is at least a play on going at that point.

Interesting observation. IMO Fulmer has had a problem of misguided priorities. He's not put the focus on what's needed to win. Reminds of me of when he focused on rushing for over 100 yds and having the fewest turnovers as the keys to beating Florida under Spurrier. Then doing that and losing.

that only happened once, in 2000, if memory serves...we kept kicking fg's instead of td's....o/t than that we beat 'em up and down the field.

I still think the guys quote is pretty relevant. After going 5-6 last season, this rule change should probably be the least of Fulmer's worries.

He is just expressing an opinion that is shared by about 50 other coaches.

Spurrier being one of them BTW....i think it is widely considered a bad rule among coaches.

Yeah, him making a comment about the rule change is going to ruin everything. I bet that little comment took away hours from practice.

It sounds like someboy had too much time on their hands and made up a new rule.

how does it sound to hear a coach who went 5-6 last season concerned about a rule change affecting his offense? IMO rule changes are the least of UT's problems.

It sounds like someone asked him his opinion of the rule change, and he gave it, along with the alleged 50 or so other head coaches, some of whom undoubtedly had a worse record than 5-6 last season.

It sounds like this rule change will effect all offenses, not just UT.

Ofcourse we all know, if Fulmer had said, "I can't answer that question, I'm too focused on getting us back from 5-6 so that people like oklavol can find their smile again." That oklavol would be saying Fulmer is too stupid to understand the important points of football, such as when the clock starts and stops, and there is no way he's ever going to succeed.

So why do we even acknowledge his silly comment on Fulmer's thoughts?

Kickoff rule sounds reasonable.

Clock after stoppage on huddle sounds like open for ref to decide if team is in huddle. This will get ugly. But if that is the rule then after stoppages they should already have the play called. No reason to huddle. Can huddle during the timeout. Go straight to the line and snap the ball. Game is changing. Adapt.

They will not shorten TV timeouts. At least not for a while. They'll need to figure out another way to generate revenue. That's what its all about for the major networks.

This may be the most lame excuse for bashing a coach that I've ever seen.

How about taking the Nascar approach and put decals on the uniforms? There's plenty of space for advertising on the football field as well. Instead of "Vols need to reach the 30 yardline for a first down", it can now be "Vol need to reach Tide with bleach for the first down"....

Agree 100% . They could also do like soccer. Put the advertising logos by the score and clock. This would work too. There are ways around having 5-10min commercial breaks.

I can see the offense coming off the field and the QB saying "The Wonderbread offense is really rolling right now. We took it down the field just like we have practiced all week. I'd like to thank Pepsi, Gatorade, Dr. Scholl's, and all the employee owners of Fruit of the Loom for their support."
