New rule in CFB this year

Kickoff rule sounds reasonable.

Clock after stoppage on huddle sounds like open for ref to decide if team is in huddle. This will get ugly. But if that is the rule then after stoppages they should already have the play called. No reason to huddle. Can huddle during the timeout. Go straight to the line and snap the ball. Game is changing. Adapt.

They will not shorten TV timeouts. At least not for a while. They'll need to figure out another way to generate revenue. That's what its all about for the major networks.

wow! what a mess it would be. you call time out but you have to go to the line.

like michigan penn state last year, there was in incomplete pass with one second left. michigan wouldn't have been able to huddle, that would have changed everything.

the kickoff rule also benefits teams with good kickrs. a lot of times you see the clock run down to a couple seconds after a score. instead of squibbing it, a team with a good kicker could just drill it and the other team wouldn't be able to do anything but watch.

if they are going to make rules like that, then the least they could do is stop the clock like normal with a certain time like 2 minutes left int he half.

Why not just go with the NFL model and keep the clock running on 1st downs?

I guess we'll see the spike after snap wasted down in certain situations like goalines....might outta send coach Cut the Dan Marino fake spike ,and toss it to the end zone play.

Ofcourse we all know, if Fulmer had said, "I can't answer that question, I'm too focused on getting us back from 5-6 so that people like oklavol can find their smile again." That oklavol would be saying Fulmer is too stupid to understand the important points of football, such as when the clock starts and stops, and there is no way he's ever going to succeed.

So why do we even acknowledge his silly comment on Fulmer's thoughts?

I guess you didnt hear any of Fulmer's comments in Fall practice last season about how the QB position was the one position he wasn't worried about.

Having UT's defense on the field for less offensive plays is a positive change if anything. I have no idea why Fulmer would be against it. Its mostly a non-issue but if anything it should be a positive change.

Blind loyalty to Fulmer and whatever he comments on doesn't make you more of a true UT fan.

This may be the most lame excuse for bashing a coach that I've ever seen.

You call that bashing? Questionning what Fulmer has his focus on? I didn't say anything about doughnuts, pumpkins, bodyweight, or win loss records vs the SEC.

Oh come on okla, you're making way too big a deal out of his comments. You act like he's taking this to court or something. It's a comment that took up about 15 seconds of his life. I would hardly say that he is "focused" on it.

The clock doesnt start in the huddle necessarily, it starts when the official blows the whistle, and following a TV timeout the team should already be prepared to go the line of scrimmage so shouldnt be a big deal.

And the way to alleviate the TV timeout problems is use the injury pauses during games and cram as many commercials as possible in this time and then you wouldnt have to take so many TV timeouts throughout the course of the game!!

I agree someone asked him the question and he answered it, would we rather him say he has no opinion on anything unless it involves improving the teams record ?? Thats ridiculous.

Just because a coach had a bad year doesn't mean he isn't allowed to speak out against rules he doesn't like. Nobody would say anything if Buffalo's, or Oklahoma State's, or Indiana's head coaches said they didn't like it. In fact, I bet some BAD COACHES have said it already.

Looks like it, that's for sure.

On the subject: kickoff rule is fine, huddle rule is stupid, way too many commercials, yada yada yada. I guess all we can do is pray for more night games so we don't have to bake in the blazing sun for an hour out of every game while TV viewers are instructed on which cell phone to buy, which beer to drink, and who to call if they've been injured in an accident.

How about taking the Nascar approach and put decals on the uniforms? There's plenty of space for advertising on the football field as well. Instead of "Vols need to reach the 30 yardline for a first down", it can now be "Vol need to reach Tide with bleach for the first down"....

Sad thing is, college football is pretty close to that as it is. They have sponsors for the first down line, the out of town scoreboard, and even the stats they bring up in the middle of the game. "This stat brought to you by Krystal" and so on. I suppose sponsor decals, or patches in a uniforms case, is the next step.

I don't like the rule changes. :banghead: The lenght of the acual game isn't the problem. The problem is the long commercials and halftimes.

I would think Fulmer would be happy about the rule change. The way I see it, the more the clock runs, the greater benefit to teams with strong defenses and good running games...

We knoe the TV timeouts are not going to be cut back because of MONEY. I actually heard on SportsTalk where they were talking about Tubberville saying it was an awful rule and would probably only last a year. Did Coach Fulmer seek out a reporter to make a comment to, I doubt it. They asked and he answered. Has anybody actually seen him at practice to make an intelligent comment about his weight or know the secrets to his diet, didn't he say at Media days he had lost 40-50 lbs? :dunno:

Agreed!

Don't change the tempo of the game.
