New Rules/Changes

I've gotta wonder at what point someone in the rules committee stands up and says the league is too safe to be exciting.

The NFL should take a step back from all the tinkering and see what it did for NASCAR.

Apparently there's some decent evidence that shows that a ton of bad injuries happen on kickoff returns. Which makes sense, given the wedge-busting, the high speeds, the marginal players looking to woodshed somebody in order to get noticed. I bet in 10 years kickoffs are gone completely.

was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and they were told that the committee actually considered removing kickoffs. It's a terrible idea IMO

I'm against it too. I just think that the NFL knows that there's going to be nothing but bad news coming up in the next few years when they start dissecting these players' brains, and there's going to be story after story after story hitting the media about how playing football kills people. The NFL is flailing about now trying to figure out what they can do safety-wise to diffuse these stories before they really hit. I think they're willing to go ahead and make a few aggressive, disruptive changes to the game now so that when the stories about brain damage start stacking up, they can say, "Well, that's old news; we've already made major changes to take out the most dangerous parts of the game."
