'We are now a lawless city': New Yorkers left on edge as random ‘sucker-punch’ assaults known as the 'knock out game' increase

A series of attacks on random strangers is putting New Yorkers on edge.

Although assaults were commonplace in the 1980s, a crackdown on the crooks saw crime levels drop making neighborhoods that were previously known as no-go areas, safe to walk around, even at night.

But now, there are fears the city is returning to the bad old days.

Areas of the city which were generally thought to be safe, such as Midtown Manhattan, Chelsea and the leafy Upper West Side, have all been locations on random assaults in recent months.

Some are describing the assaults as proof of the return of the so-called 'knockout game.'

Gang member suddenly reverses and drags NYPD cop along the ground during traffic stop after he was freed by judge Despite attempted Murder charge

A New York police officer was taken to hospital in the early hours of Friday after a freed gang member and attempted murder suspect suddenly reversed his car at a traffic stop, dragging the officer with him before going on a wild 12-hour rampage.

The unnamed officer stopped Takim Newson, 32, at 3:30am in the troubled Brownsville section of Brooklyn.

They were called to reports of a Mercedes-Benz with excessively tinted windows blocking traffic.

The officer tried to pull Newson out of the car, but Newson rapidly reversed, startling the officer and knocking him to the ground before speeding off.
