Next Year's Center

It seems like they have abandoned him all together. He is not even in any rotation, despite big struggles from Left guard until last week. I hope he develops into what he is expected to.
Four games into his redshirt freshman season? Me too! Mebbe he can take heart that Ollie Lane got into THREE GAMES his first THREE YEARS on campus. I think Spraggins is less likely than Cooper to return…so that’s another spot to compete. He’ll be fine.

Seeing the difference a quality Center seemingly makes in our offense has me wondering: who might be the starting center next year when Cooper leaves? There is exciting young talent and depth at almost every position, except for along the OL. My understanding is that the two backups to Cooper right now are Ollie Lane and Dayne Davis, all of whom will likely be gone next year.

Anyone have any insights on this?
Mays seems on the small side for a SEC center. Is there really a spot in the NFL for someone of his stature? Smart gritty player, but I’d think he’s fighting an uphill battle to overcome his size and earn a spot in the NFL. Regardless, I’m pulling for himJMO, TIFWIW

yes, Addison is a true center and I bet he is the guy

Edit: I expect the OL to take a step backward next year just because we have several OL graduating.
True, but we have some talented OLinemen coming in. They will be a little short on experience but should be quick learners. We will also have an inexperienced QB, but again I think we will be OK and get better s the year progresses. 2025 and beyond will be outstanding years for our Football program.

Addison Nichols maybe
Addison Nichols was the guy recruited to replace Cooper. He just isnt ready yet. Now idk if thats because of him or Glen E. But next your he is your Center most likely. But you need to grab another one out of the portal as a replacement to him.

The VQ guys said awhile Vysen Lang was the guy they think has a bright future at center, plus Addison Nichols certainly could be an option. I think we'll obviously go to the portal to get some experienced depth/ starters. Both Mincey and Karic can come back next year, so assuming they come back, we could have Sham, Karic, Lang, Nichols, and Mincey from left to right. That would be very inexperienced though.
But alot of talent 👍✌️

I agree on needing portal help.
Who do we have in current class that projects as a center?

Titans current center is listed at 6'1" 298. Using that simply as an example... used to be a day you didn't want your center & guards too tall, or so I thought. Hope he comes back, but I'd be surprised.

Offer Cooper $250k to come back. That more than NFL practice squad guys.
NIL money is a great thing, but it may be the only way he gets paid next season. Although we all know and love Cooper, he isn't getting the love from NFL scouts. I've looked at several draft boards and he doesn't crack one list. In 2021 there were eight centers taken in the draft. 2022 saw six being taken and in 2023 there were nine. There simply are not many centers taken on an annual basis. I'm sure an NFL career is what he wants; however, he simply isn't getting the attention he needs. Another year will certainly boost his draft stock. Joe Tippman was the first center taken in the last draft. He went in the second round and averages $2M/year. Alex Forsyth was taken in round seven and averages $1M/year. The top veteran centers earn between $10-$12M/year. I can't see how anyone with knowledge of the NFL draft would advise him to leave Tennessee after this season.

They really need for some of the young guys to take a step up. The O line is really a developmental position so hopefully that actually pans out that some of our underclassmen have gained the strength needed for this league and have leveraged the learning at their positions to be successful.
Maybe the most developmental position on the team. It’s a rare bird who can seeing significant playing time as a freshman at OL. Not many Trey Smith’s out there. BUT…I do think OLineman show more development typically from 1st to 2nd year players. It’s just the lack of playing time you worry about.
