Next Years Defense

A couple posters on here definately underestimate Ryan Karl. I am not "waiting on him to graduate" because he is a very good LB. He does not have some of the physical attributes of Chris Donald. But, he has great speed, tackles very well, plays hard non-stop, and is very intelligent about assignments.

Absolutely. I love Ryan Karl. If only everyone on defense would play that hard every down.

Yeah, Im glad he hasnt graduated yet. i think he's a great role model to all the new Freshman coming in.. He's going to show them that hard work and dedication will get u a starting spot.. not how highly you were recruited coming out of High School

I forgot about Willingham is a JUCO, so he is gonna have to step it up and Start. I also Believe Eric Berry And McKenzie play a BIG role in our defense. Here is how i would put it now:

DE: X-mitchell, W.Fisher
DT: Mapu Bolden
LB: McCoy, Karl, Mayo
CB: Willingham, Berry
FS: Hefney
SS: Wardlow or McKenzie ( If he can step it up )

Yeah. But he'll see time at DE I bet. We've always switched back and forth between DT and DE with those capable of playing it..atleast recently anyway.

I am hoping Karl to graduate like I was hoping Antwan Steward Both have nothing but exp.

Yep your right, that must explain why he was the Teams 5th leading tackler in 2006. 4th in Solo tackles and tied for 2nd in Tackles for Loss. Karl will be back for his Senior year as the Starter unless injured.

Seems some people are still upset Fulmer took an in-state 2 star

Why would Reynolds and Mitchell not be the starting DEs like last year? I know they didn't produce much, but the coaches tend to play experience over talent a lot of the time. Could be really helpful for the first couple of games unless someone just improves so dramatically that they can't be sat. So far as LBs go, those three should start, but unless they are committing to making McCoy learn MLB he is better served staying on the edge. (Personally, I think they should make him a MLB because he'll have 3 years to lock it down.)

No chance that McCoy is the biggest. He is the smallest. He is around 210. Mayo is about 230-235. Karl is in between the 2.

I think Karl goes about 220-225. I still think it is possible that he plays the middle. Just trying to figure out how to get our best three linebackers on the field.

The easiest way to get the best 3 on would be:
SLB-Karl(played it his whole career at UT)
MLB-Mayo(biggest and best equipped for MLB)
WLB-McCoy(probably our fastest and best blitzer)

Where does Andre Mathis fit into the D next season? I've heard rumors that he may be moved to DE? I'm of the opinion that he has major upside based on how highly ranked he was coming in?

i haven't heard much about him lately.. He could be a good DE with his speed. I could see him and Robert Ayers challenge A. Reynolds for the DE spot. Walter Fisher will also challenge for it.. X. Mitchell has basically locked himself in as a starter with his play but things can change. I see our DE's being stout and deep next year.

Does anyone know what Mayo weighed last year? I would love to see him put on about 10 lbs. If he had significant gains in strength and weight from last year, I think 10lbs could be possible.

ON Mayo, he's already got speed. He's a sure tackler, and he's really good at blitzing.. Remember that Cal game when he had at least 2 sacks.. He might have led our team in sacks but i know that if he wouldnt have gotten hurt, he would have been the leader in tackles.
Our whole linebacker corps will be faster and overall more talented next year..
