Next year's roster

What is a “true 2/3 guy”? And saying he will play and saying he will start are two different things. Not a doubt in my mind that he plays.
Size, can penetrate off the dribble, shoots it well, lock down defender usually on the other teams best player, good rebounder, finishes well, plays above the rim, aggressive offensively and quick...those are the qualities of a true 2/3 guy. Johnson is the only player on the team with all those qualities and he's above average at all of them, potentially great. His personality fits Coach Barnes to a tee. I think he and JJJ could be 2 of the best defensive guards in the SEC next year. I expect both Keon and Springer to have better Fr seasons than JJJ/Vescovi had and should that happen we are in for a great year. If we rebound the ball next year we could very well have the best defensive team in the country. Between Fulky, JJJ, Pons, Springer, Keon, Vescovi, Bailey and Anosike we should have enough offensive output to be top half of the conference offensively. There are some grown men bodies on next year's roster as well, especially when we add the 2 football players. The layup line is going to be fun to watch!

No disrespect to James, but honestly Vescovi was the most impactful freshman on our team this year. Those December games post Turner’s injury and departure were pure agony to watch. I think Springer, Vescovi and James all start. Offense flows through Fulkerson and Springer and everyone else complements them.
Barnes is a defensive minded coach and in basketball TALLER, faster, stronger usually wins. I don't think our 2 shortest guys are going to be together on the floor that often, we'd be committing suicide on the defensive end if we were to do so. Springer and Vescovi are going to split minutes I think. Vescovi's role will be as a spot up shooter while Springer will be used to break defenses down with penetration. James is going to play every position but the 5 this year is why I believe he'll get the most minutes. He's also the best passer and arguably the best rebounder on the team and he's one of the best defensive guards in the country. Vescovi had a great year and we're going to need his big shot making ability, I just think he and Gaines stand to lose the most minutes with the influx of talent coming in at the guard position. JJJs all around play is what separates him from others, he's a Scottie Pippen clone I feel. JJJ can be a 17/8/7 guy with 2-4 Steals/Blocks a game. Vescovi is solid but I don't think he'll ever be capable of putting up those numbers, and if he could he's still a liability on the defensive end as well as being turnover prone, even though he improved on both towards the end of the year.

Yep. There were a few games where he ( Vescovi) was the most impactful player on the team. He improved very much on D I thought. He anticipates very well which helps.

Johnson is not an above average shooter, and definitely not great.

Springer is 15 and Johnson 16, guys 15-19 the last 5 years...

2019:
Bryan Antoine 5.4mpg 1.4ppg
Trendon Watford 31.6mpg 13.6ppg
Precious Achiuwa 30.4mpg 15.8ppg
Josiah James 29.9mpg 7.4ppg
Samuel Williamson 15.3mpg 4.4ppg

2018:
Keldon Johnson 30.7mpg 13.5ppg
Kevin Porter 22.1mpg 9.5ppg
Darius Garland DNP
Darius Bazely DNP
Andrew Nembhard 32.9mpg 8.0ppg

2017:
PJ Washington 27.4mpg 10.8ppg
Trae Young 35.4mpg 27.4ppg
Nick Richards 14.7mpg 5.1ppg
Gary Trent Jr. 33.9mpg 14.5ppg
Lonnie Walker 27.8mpg 11.5ppg

2016:
Jarrett Allen 32.2mpg 13.4ppg
TJ Leaf 29.9mpg 16.3ppg
Rawle Alkins 28.0mpg 10.9ppg
Omari Spellman DNP
Mustapha Heron 28.2mpg 15.2ppg

2015:
Stephen Zimmerman 26.2mpg 10.5ppg
Chase Jeter 7.9mpg 1.9ppg
Ray Smith DNP
Tyler Dorsey 30.1mpg 13.4ppg
Caleb Swanigan 25.7mpg 10.2ppg

So over 5 years the average for players in the ranking is 25.9mpg 11.2ppg, expecting 12-15ppg from BOTH of those guys seems just a bit overzealous, but then again this is Tennessee.

He’s more of a slasher who can get to the rim with ease. Kind of like Springer.
Yup exactly...it’s why I think you’ll see Bailey and Vescovi getting big minutes, throwing Springer/Johnson/James/Pons/Fulky out there is asking for teams to just sit back or play zone.

I wouldn’t mind seeing Vescovi and Bailey start the season, but I know Springer is more than likely a starter.

If we pulled Cisse, would we move fulky to the 4? I think our lineup would be insane.

Springer
JJJ
Pons
Fulky
Cisse

Subs:
Keon
Bailey
Vescovi
Walker
Uros

Redshirt
Ticket
Pember

It really doesn’t matter who starts, allocates minutes is more important, Turner was getting huge minutes before and Bowden also has off the bench.

Vescovi
Bailey
Springer
Johnson
James
Pons
Fulk
Anosike

are all going to get big minutes, probably 20+ a piece, or real close to it...

That leaves Gaines, ORN, Walker, Plavsic and Pember...2 of those guys will likely carve out a role and we will have a 10 man rotation, hard to see Barnes going much deeper than 10.

Most of the kids in the 15 and 16 spot are one and done players.

I like most of what you said, but James himself will tell you he was not the best passer on the team. He said he was frustrated by his dumb passes at times, and expressed frustration with himself in that area. He did say that he was working hard to improve his passing, though.

Good stuff, BTO. It looks like 2016 was a good year for this set of players.

That’s fine, but you basically just described both Johnson and Springer, and in a sense, JJJ. And none of those guys excel in every area you mentioned, either. JJJ lacks aggression, Springer and Johnson lack consistency in their perimeter shot. All three can fill that role, though.

Still, the main issue I disagree with is the point you haven’t addressed, which was your original belief that Johnson starts. He’s a good player and I believe he will play a lot for the reasons you mentioned, but I just think it’s a tall order to expect a freshman who missed most of his senior year and won’t likely get the benefit of a full summer workout schedule to come in with only fall practice and start.

You’ll likely point to Vescovi as the counterpoint, but again, he was the exception, and frankly, we didn’t have a lot of options at PG. A month earlier, Barnes talked of redshirting him because it was unrealistic to expect him to come in with no camp and little practice, and immediately contribute.

It is a tall order because downtime due to injuries or other factors just creates a very tough scenario for any player to come into at the top of his game.

Barnes is not going to play much over 7 or 8 guys, he never has really. The 8 you mentioned will basically be our team next year. I don't think Bailey is going to get as many minutes as everyone thinks.

The longer C19 drags on the more Bailey will play. JJJ was really set back by missing so much pre-season time.

Yet he still played 30 minutes a game. Johnson and JJJ will both get 30 minutes a game as will Fulky and Pons. Springer, Vescovi and Anosike will all 3 get somewhere between 20-25 minutes a game I think. Playing time is going to be hard to come by for Walker, Gaines, Pember, Big O, Uros and the football guys.

Nothing at all for bailey?
