The new turf (Sprinturf being one) is much much better than the turfs that were developed in the '70s. Our local HS has put Sprinturf on both the football and baseball fields. It is much softer than the stuff laid on top of asphalt, it drains almost immediately and has also proven to be LESS injury prone than GRASS, believe it or not. When the school decided to put this stuff in, I thought they were nuts. A year later...it has proven to be the best surface for cleated sports. The only problem with this stuff is it holds heat. On an 80 degree evening football game, the field temperature is around 88 degrees. That would be a huge problem for UT for games such as UAB. OTOH, you can never rain out a game on this stuff. 10 minutes after a monsoon and it's ready to play.
