He had lower leg issues a good portion of his career here I believe. When he was playing at times he wasn’t 100 percent.Dude ran a 4.30 at the combine. Pretty amazing for a guy of any size. Almost unheard of for someone over 6’ 4”.
How was he not able to get nearly as much separation as Hyatt? I’m coming around to the idea that Golesh was much, much better than Halzle.
Meh, I don’t disagree we need a new position coach there but damn some of these guys need to get their heads out of their rears. Drops can only partially be blamed on a position coach. If you’re in a position to make a play you catch the Fing ball.I think it's more Pope, atleast with the lack of WR production and all the drops the last 2 yrs.
Speaking of Alex Golesh, at some point we have to realize (or admit in some cases) that everyone is not replaceable. You can't just steal someone's blueprint. Talent is an individual thing. You either have it or you don't. You can't 'practice' it. You can't learn it. You just exhibit it. Or you don't. It's all on you.Dude ran a 4.30 at the combine. Pretty amazing for a guy of any size. I think Thorton beat man to man plenty in 2023. But he dropped probably 4-5 wide open passes that would have totaled over 200+ receiving yards. His health for one and Heupel played him in the wrong position in his first year. But let’s be real. The combine 40 time is useless. Thorton rarely beat man coverage here. He rarely went up and got any 50/50 balls. He wasn’t anywhere near the deep threat we thought he would be. Jalin Hyatt ran a 4.4 but has done nothing. Jerry Tice ran a 4.6 but could beat any DB one in one.
Combine speed isn’t that important.
Yeah but Scott was possibly the slowest world class speed guy I've seen when lined up at WR. He had 1-2 breakaway catches that I remember (specifically one in 1999) but he couldn't seperate from a DB if it killed him.Eh, Scott is, AFAIK, the fastest person to ever legitimately play big time football with a 9.91 100m. He also in 4 years here managed 28 receptions. CP, while fast, was nowhere near Scott and had 46 receptions in just his one season with us.
What you correctly point out is something not uncommon with burners that really aren't all that as football players. He was absolutely an "if he's even he's leaving" guy but if that's pretty much all they've got you just hedge the speed routes and leave them with few options. Add in that he didn't have great hands in the first place and well...you know the rest.Yeah but Scott was possibly the slowest world class speed guy I've seen when lined up at WR. While I agree Nico missed some throws, anyone with a brain knew he wasn't gonna be at the same level as HH his first full year starting. However Jalin was far superior at getting open and the scheme was better with Golesh. He saw ways to attack and getting personnel in mismatched. Halze doesn't seem to do that. Back to Nico, the guy is a young QB. It takes time. HH didn't have great stats until it clicked.Having a QB that sees it perfectly and doesn't miss helps a lot.
How you cheer for Tenn and speak negative about a guy who helped the team succeed. The man is progressing into his pro career. Played injured all year but that's part if the game/risk. Nothing wrong with wishing the former vol well. Talking bout if you were a GMYep. Guy will be on injured reserve shortly after signing his contract. A no go for me....if I were making a draft decision.
That will come with time you cant really compare a 2nd year guy to a 5th year guy execution wise. Nico has better physical tools he just needs the experience. Thortons biggest problem was staying on the field. he seemed to be hurt or hobbled his whole time here.Having a QB that sees it perfectly and doesn't miss helps a lot.
CP was always more shifty than fast .. he's not slow (4.42) but he was not about straight line speed. 4.42 is fast 4.3 is fast fast..... In the history of the combine only 17 people have run an official 4.3 or faster. 4 of them happened this year. Its really kind of amazing.Eh, Scott is, AFAIK, the fastest person to ever legitimately play big time football with a 9.91 100m. He also in 4 years here managed 28 receptions. Oh CP was plenty fast, especially at 6 2/216. As you say he was ALSO elusive and had very good open field instincts which obviously served him well as a returner.CP was always more shifty than fast .. he's not slow (4.42) but he was not about straight line speed. 4.42 is fast 4.3 is fast fast..... Not all speed Kills. Gault had pretty good hands and built a good college and pro career for a trackster.Yeah but Scott was possibly the slowest world class speed guy I've seen when lined up at WR. He had 1-2 breakaway catches that I remember (specifically one in 1999) but he couldn't seperate from a DB if it killed him.
When he scored on either a long bomb or a punt return, I loved how John Ward would say, "Willie ... GAULT!"I'm prob biased since we are from same highschool, 4 years apart. So I got to be at the track waiting to run while he was sprinting. (They wouldn't let underclassmen on track when he walked up. Had to earn the right). And I got to see him on the football field first hand.
I persoanlly think Gault is a somewhat forgotten super athlete. Put up good numbers at UT in football and track. Had a few UT football recrods for years. May still be on top for all purpose yards. Has a superbowl ring. 11 year NFL career. Pretty good all purpose yards, and some team leading receiving years. Spats with McMahon may have curbed his targets and potential. Business owner/ceo. Amatuer/celebrity golf. Actor. Ballet. Masters Track till age 60ish. 1980 Olympic Sprinter (US Boycotted), Can still bust a 12s 100m at 65. Not an ounce of fat still. Genetic freak in all definitions of the word. The only bad decsion I can remmeber was divorcing his beautiful high school sweetheart he was married to for so many years. Don't know why though. I guess holding up in Chicago for so long, his son went hte artist route. Never saw any of his kids try the sports route.
