Nico looked better after injury

Nico played better after the injury last Saturday, something had changed. I originally thought it was the injury. But now I am wondering if it wasn't the interception. When he went to the sidelines and saw his backup throw a pick, he knew his team needed him. He went back in to help his team win the game.

I think the kid is naturally more comfortable fighting for his team, than fighting to show how good he can play. It showed in his play after the injury.

Whatever the reason, we saw him grow, and it is only up from here.

Or…maybe…he just finally hit some throws he should hit and it has nothing to do injury, interceptions, or any other wild narrative y’all are throwing out there?

Nico threw the interception after the injury and after Gaston Moore had ended the previous drive with a pick. Had no business throwing that pass. 1st down inside the 20 driving with momentum. All he had to do was throw the ball away and we get 3 points at minimum, maybe even hand the ball off and get 7 and go into halftime tied.

Nico’s a redshirt freshman. He for sure had the yips at the beginning of the game. He was making great decisions other than the int, he was just over throwing. Once he got hit and realized he wasn’t gonna die, he settled in and made some really nice, game changing throws.

Feels more like he stopped playing afraid after the hit. Perhaps he made his peace with it, not sure but you can do great things only when you are not focusing on your fear.

I have felt since that game that when Nico went down and he saw Gaston give it up it was a "Flip the switch" moment. As other posters have noted, Nico has the skill set, it was just the mental side that he needed to grow in. Often times people mature greatly under severe stress situations. I honestly believe the sequence of events beginning with the hit and then watching your backup put your team in a terrible position turned on the light he needed to perform at a higher level. He is young and will make mistakes. I think he achieved a major turning point in his young career with that experience. Go Vols!!!
Hot take: Gaston knew that’s what Nico needed and as the ultimate team player and future coach that he is, he sacrificed his reputation with that awful interception. In a way, he’s the real MVP.
