Watching the play-calling last night, it seems to me anyways that the coaches do not have confidence in Nico's ability to throw the ball. I can't pretend that I have insight into the mind of Nico, but putting myself in his place, if the coaches do not have confidence in me, how can I have confidence in myself? It seems to me like he second guesses himself repeatedly and is afraid to make a mistake, hence why he always seems to go for the quick screen or dunk rather a downfield play (with wide open receivers at times). Or why he ran it out of bounds at the end of the game rather than trying to throw it at the endzone.

I get that there needs to be some level of risk-aversion as a QB to prevent costly mistakes, but too much risk-aversion is a bad thing IMO. The coaches need to do a better job of allowing Nico to open up the passing game and instilling confidence in the QB. If you're too afraid of failure, you'll never succeed.

Complete open passes, maybe?

That's not even meant to be snarky. He had some open looks and didn't make 'em last night. Gotta make those. I think that's how you build confidence. I'm not sure there's any other way to do it.

It does feel like the restrictors are on with Nico. I wish they would let him loose against a meaningful opponent to see how he does.

I said at the start of the 2nd half we should run it 2 out of every 3 plays. We win this game if we stuck to we were doing the first 2 drives of the 2nd half. Josh calls pass plays when he doesn't need to call them

Confidence is something that can't be coached or taught. Better to burn the game from his memory and prepare for next week, or it is going to be a long season and off-season.

Nico doesn’t handle pressure well and unfortunately we haven’t been able to give him much of a pocket when playing SEC teams. The pressure impacts his accuracy and maybe his vision - if we do have open receivers he’s not seeing them.

We’re either going to provide better pass protection with our front five or be forced to line up with two TEs more often.

He also needs an offensive line and receivers who will get separation. Our offense is not yet close to where it should and needs to be.

We need to use the middle of the field early and often. We know the OL has been suspect. Penalties and sacks killed any confidence early. He needs rhythm early. Again first play we had a penalty that cost us because of a stupid bone headed play by Karic.

First off...Nico is a redshirt freshman having played one game last year (bowl game) and only NC State...not doing so hot...on his resume given the cupcakes we have played. We go to a hostile Fayetteville Arkansas for a night game and the deer in Nico's headlights were HUGE! I am not expecting an SEC or NCAA Championship this year. The sports nuts that were hailing Tennessee as National Champions showed their hand and an empty one at that. Let's all take a deep breath, no fratricide, and support our team through a difficult game and time. We have the makings of a really good football program and team. I am a VFL so GBO and beat Florida!

Nico was marketed as the answer to our QB prayers and was paid handsomely to do a job we desperately needed. He does fine when our line holds strong and our receivers smoke the defense's secondary, however, in less than ideal conditions, he does not seem to understand when to throw the ball away, take the sack, or scramble. I think he has great potential, but not in the conditions we currently have.

Every young QB has to go through this when taking a step up. HS to College to Pro. Some of the blocks missed last night that resulted in sacks shouldn't have happened. Our backs and Tackles have to do a better job.

We threw the ball 28 times, more were called pass plays where Nico ran bc no one was open. I think this is more of a case where everyone needs to do their job. WRs need to get open and catch the ball, Oline has to protect.

Appears to be holding the ball too long. But hey, I'm just an armchair fan. I thought Joe Milton had the same issue. It might be due to the receivers being covered or maybe it's due to indecision. Hopefully, more playing time will cure that.

With the pressure Arkansas was bringing, I kept thinking some quick slants over the middle, or roll Nico out with a receiver ahead of him to get them out of pressure. Gotta do something to make them play honest defense.

Nico needs some bench time to get his s..t together. This ain't NAIA this is big boy ball. How do you play that position from 7th grade thru 12th grade and do something that stupid and that selfish. It'd be hard to find an 10th grade QB that would do that. Throw the d..n ball!

I think the fans and the media have put a whole lot of pressure on Nico a bit too soon in his development.

This is my thought.......dude is a redshirt freshman.....he's still slowing the game down. And before anyone says "he's been here since 2023", there's a difference in live, hostile games and practice/scrimmages. He seems super smart and a student of the game who wants to win, I think he'll learn from this. I agree with @87&91ALUM I think he was hailed as Peyton Manning 2.0 and he's got a ton of pressure on him. We need to realize he's going to grow and get better and I hope he sticks around through his jr. year.

That said, when they showed a few replays from behind him it didnt appear to me anyone was getting open or separation like I would have thought they would, especially in obvious passing downs. . Additionally the WR's weren't tending to work with him when he scrambled like the last play. Hopefully they start to gel together as the season progresses.

Only shade I'll throw is at o-line.......I'm not sold on Elarbee. Hope I'm wrong.

On top of everything else, he was pretty much running for his life the whole game. And that's what the Arky coaches said their plan was. To get after the QB and make him uncomfortable. They did just that, and our OL couldn't prevent it. NewsFlash!!! Nico cannot win games by himself, shocking as that might be for some of you.
