Nico to UCLA?

First, they are not going to defer any of the money to avoid taxes. His family needs the money to live on. The money is earned in California and he will be living there. He’s going to have to CA state taxes.
Good, it’s kinda of like people moving to our state because of “high taxes” and then vote to make it just like they come from. Choices have consequences

Reports are actually that UCLA isn't giving him what he wants, so less money, and is "standing firm" (their words) on the offer. I wouldn't quite say Nico to UCLA yet considering how idiotic their side has played this whole thing.
I totally agree. UCLA signed a quarterback in the winter portal for 1.2 million A They are not paying over 1.5 million . After taxes and the cost of living, he will be lucky to make 500k He was on a 10 and two playoff team. There he will be playing in a lower tier, Big 10. 5 or 6 wins maybe.

Is it possible for him to claim residency elsewhere than the LA area and escape the LA taxes? Just curious, I’ve no knowledge of this but it would make sense that an NIL group paying him might be able to find some way to help him escape those high taxes. Although, he is California resident anyway right?

As said, I’ve no knowledge on how this situation works bc I’ve never made anywhere close to this type of money in 1year, but in my experience big money usually finds a way to mitigate financial loss through taxes.
No, Cali has a state income tax and they tax athletes closely. If you roll into LA to play the Lakers and you're with the Memphis NBA team, they tax your income for the games you play in California. It's the California Tax Franchise Board. I'm very familiar with them after paying taxes there for about 15 years, moved to Vegas and gave myself a super bonus, then had to pay Nevada car insurance rates which were through the roof at the time. Why? Because Nevada has 7X24 open liquor stores and the insurance companies convince the legislature that's cause for super high rates.

Just saw on 24/7 that UCLA has made the Nico camp an offer but, haven’t heard back yet. They also brought up that UCLA brought in the App. St. QB for $1.3m. NIL

Maybe we can just trade and UCLA can have Nico and we get the App. St. QB.

I would take that as a win.

If his family needs that money to live on after the pay he has already received then that represents a whole new level of irresponsibly. Surely the few million he has already received should cover their financial situation for quite awhile, right?

Then again, I suppose it’s possible that the old cliche saying “a fool and his $ are soon parted” could certainly be an issue. If that is the case, I have very little empathy for them. Honestly though, after the Nico camp’s recent decisions, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to me.

Lol, wow. I had no idea. Lobbyists are the worst! 😂 Thanks for sharing, that’s very interesting.

I think a lot of states that have an income tax make pro athletes pay the tax when they come to town to play games. Cali isn’t the only one, but I bet it just hurts more. 😁
