With National Signing Day now less than a week away,
Jayson Jenkins primarily has narrowed his focus to a pair of schools and expects to pick one of them in the coming days. He has one more stop to make before he can decide.
The Class of 2022 defensive lineman from Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, N.J., is scheduled to travel to Tennessee on Friday for an official visit with the Vols this weekend. He said he plans to choose between “just Tennessee and West Virginia,” which hosted him on an official visit the weekend of Jan. 14.
The 6-foot-6, 260-pound Jenkins also took an official visit to Florida last weekend, but he’s still awaiting a scholarship offer from the Gators. He went to Boston College and Pittsburgh on official visits last month, but he’s no longer considering the Eagles and Panthers.
Jenkins said he believes he will be “ready to make a decision” not long after he makes the trip to Tennessee this weekend. He added that he will “definitely not” be waiting until National Signing Day on Wednesday to announce his choice.
He’s ready to see for himself what the Vols have to offer. He said he has heard plenty from them since getting an offer from Tennessee on Jan. 4.
“It’s going to be my first time in Knoxville, so (I will be) pretty much just seeing what the area’s like, seeing campus and just, overall, getting the vibe that they have over there,” said Jenkins, who’s ranked the No. 173 defensive lineman in the 2022 class, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. “I’m pretty much just looking forward to what the weekend has to hold.”
Vols defensive coordinator
Tim Banks and defensive line coach
Rodney Garner traveled to New Jersey more than a week ago to visit with Jenkins coming off his visit to West Virginia. On Wednesday, Tennessee head coach
Josh Heupel joined Garner in traveling to Jenkins’ school to see him ahead of his trip to Knoxville.
“Their message to me was just basically that they really, really like me over at Tennessee, and that there’s not only a want for me — there’s a need for me at that position,” said Jenkins, who received his first Division I offer in October from Boston College.
“They’re just happy and excited for me to be coming down there for an official and to see what Tennessee has to offer.”
The Vols have told him, he said, that they envision him being able to line up “pretty much anywhere on the defensive line.” He has picked up offers from more than a dozen schools, including Missouri, Indiana, Syracuse and Virginia.
Jenkins, who has family in the Memphis, Tenn., area, said the opportunity to play in the SEC is one of the reasons he’s intrigued by Tennessee.
“Not only just the chance to play at the highest level in college football, but also just the fact that the coaching staff and everybody there has been so inclusive in recruiting me,” he said. “I really get that family feel from them, and that’s what I like — an all-inclusive program. That’s what pretty much draws me to them, and I’m just really excited to go down to Knoxville this weekend.”
