Call it what you want we and she don’t care lol. Why would Dawn give a damn knowing she has one of the best teams annually in the country and they could back it up on the court? The banner was to honor all the hard work those young ladies put in Last year. They ended the short season #1 so why not?
Several posts defending it, but you don't care??

That comments is about as bogus as that banner. Unanimous??

it is what it is coach. I back SC with everything they do so if putting up a banner is something they want to do I stand by it.
So you are ok with it because they wanted to do it?

I guarantee that South Carolina fans would be the first to call it ridiculous if the situation was the same for another team.

Why you here if you don't care. No one here cares either we just think it is a little Narcissistic and self centered and you seem to be backing that up.

With several days between games, I thought this would be an interesting and controversial topic to discuss on this board. I saw it on the UConn board and the opinions between the UConn fans and South Carolina fans were obviously quite different. I was just wondering what the folks here think considering all the banners you guys have hanging at TBA.

I'm sure the few South Carolina fans here will chime in.

At their home game before the Florida game, South Carolina unveiled a banner that says "Unanimous # 1 2019-2020".

Personally I think that is ridiculous.

What do you guys think?
To put up self grandiose banners means little outside your own program. It might create a positive spin among your own team but could possibly cause others to play you tougher because you have declared yourself number one when there was not a national championship game. I personally would not have raised such a banner. It really gets down to what floats your boat.

This would make sense, but still be a little silly, if South Carolina was actually the unanimous #1 team. They weren't, so it's pretty dumb.

I'm also unconvinced that South Carolina would have actually cut down the nets and truly believe that Ionescu would have found a way to will Oregon to the national title.

That banner belonged in the dressing room,, as an inspiration for the troops ONLY....If they have a crappy year/finish it will become a thorn for a very long time as it is

I have tried to not express opinions on the forum here.... but this seems a no brainer.... and worth chiming in again

First of all, I totally support SC's right to do anything they want to do.... including hanging a banner in their barn.... but based on what? The polls? To me the polls are a loose indicator only of the snapshot picture.... To take a poll or two and stretch their logic out to the extent of declaring a mythical champion is more than silly it is stupid. I love Ionescu's game and think she could have delivered for Oregon in the tournament that never was.... but to think that in the absence of tournament, all other teams not named South Carolina should curtsy to Gamecocks and admit or acknowledge that they were last year's champions ... it is just beyond the realm of practical thinking.

There are many examples of why one team cannot claim champion status regardless of poll standings which may have suggested that they were worthy of top billing. I will just pick as example the National Hockey League and last year's situation. The Boston Bruins have for several years now had pretty much the best record in the league going into the playoff tournament. Two years ago they got "upset" by the Blues from St Louis. That is why there is a tournament to be played. This past year.... the Bruins had by far the best record at the end of the season. They had but 14 losses the entire season. The eventual Stanley Cup winners, Tampoa Bay, had 21. 50 percent more losses!

But they played the tournament. And you know what? The outcome was not even close. Tampa Bay put a hurt on the Bruins .... and without the benefit of its superstar Steven Stamkos. The NHL did not stop the season at the end of regular season, declare Boston champion, and attend an associated banner raising in the TD Center. No that would have been stupid.

And what about the polls? Do they take into account everything? Strength of schedule? Injuries? Notre Dame beat Clemson in football in South Bend when Clemson was without its bell cow QB.... and rose in the polls... didn't help them in their 2nd meeting. Many vagaries.

I like SC and love what Dawn has done with its program.... they should be very proud.... but let's be reasonable.

I swear I’m not being contrarian just to be contrarian here, but I don’t see what the big deal is that has everyone feeling so passionate about. The way I see it, it was a heartbreaking end to last season, and particularly so for the top five or six teams that felt they had a shot at a national title.

Gawd! I was so upset for so many outstanding senior players who didn’t get their shot. Remember how Sabrina Ionescu came back for another year just to win a championship? Ugh. And South Carolina was definitely looking like a shoo-in for the Final Four and had, maybe, the best overall shot at a natty. All the hopes and dreams were dashed. Double UGH!!!

So not getting a national championship trophy meant that the only concrete way South Carolina could mark the excellent season they had last year that made for at least SOMEthing positive out of that abrupt cancellation of all their hard work was to point out the fact that in the final AP Top 25 Poll they had, as a small consolation, finished the season at #1 in the poll and the voters were unanimous in giving them that small consolation.

Why is it so wrong that they want one positive symbol from a season that ended in tears and disappointment? Y’all are harsh. Dang!

Not to be a contrarian to your contrarian but was the the SEC title in both the regular season and tourney titles and their trophies not positive symbols?

someone else mentioned it you put up a banner the same size as your Natty banner...

It didn’t bother me either way but a banner the same size as your Natty is a little much.

Unless it is won outright and undisputed, it is a "participation banner"

You and I definitely have different definitions of "passionate". That's a strange adjective to use on a message board, or any other discussion taking place over text, especially one like this where the general consensus is a simple "wow, that's dumb".

Again I ask, “So what?!” If hanging a banner brings some joy to members of the program and their loyal fans, who is that hurting? Can’t we relax our sphincters for a little while and recognize that everyone is just doing their best to find ways to manage the madness of the world these days?
