Looking at the stats from the USU game it hit me that with all of the receiver talent UT has they will probably not have a 1000 yard receiver. Worley spread the ball around effectively against USU:

Name Catches Yards
Josh Smith 3 for 48
Jason Croom 2 for 41
Marquez North 4 for 38
Pig Howard 6 for 37
Von Pearson 3 for 27
Josh Malone 2 for 26
Ethan Wolf 3 for 26
Jalen Hurd 2 for 16
Brendan Downs 1 for 12
Marlin Lane 1 for 2
Daniel Helm 1 for 0

With the makeup of this offense do you think the trend of many players catching passes will continue?

I think you won't see the ball spread out to quite as many players because of the competition.

Additionally I also think Tennessee will have more vertical attempts for most of the season so the yardage numbers will be higher.

take what the defense gives you. If they are gonna double team North, it will open up other options. Its nice to have some playmakers at the skill positions again.

Don't look to hard at those numbers op. The only real stat that matters is wins and losses. The rest will take care if itself.

I disagree on the attempts being spread out. Competition is important i know. But the way Butch runs his offense. Multiple receivers will see the field. There for i think it will always be spread out among many guys. Whether they catch it when thrown to them is a different story. My biggest concern is how the pass rush will be contained. Our DL was inexperienced but much faster than the OL of Utah State. When we see bigger and faster guys across from our OL is a little scary. Hopefully Worley gets more comfortable than he looked. And im not saying he didnt look comfortable. Just saying there is improvement even for someone like Peyton. Hope you all get the point. But if Worley is able to keep improving and make good reads. Then i think getting rid of the ball quickly will help with protection. But back on point. I dont see a 1000 yard receiver as well. Doubt we see a 1000 yard rusher as well.

Where's #7 wr Drae Bowles? Is he still on the team & why is he not playing? I remember him being a highly recruited player.

And we missed on pretty much all of our deep passes Sunday. I expect to see that corrected and we should have 1 or 2 chunks of 30 yards or more

I do know Marquez needs more targeted throws in SEC play... USU and Arky St games are fine to spread it around to 10 players, but when we go to Norman,OK,Marquez needs to be a focal point of the passing game until OU starts putting safety help over the top in man defense, then they should start dumping it to Von,Pig,Hurd, and getting Croom and Malone involved...

Marquez is too beastly to only throw 4-5 balls his way out of 38...Hopefully its just the vanilla play calling because of the opponent...

I believe we'll see more vertical passes as we go along. I don't mind seeing the ball being spread around as long as we're moving the ball downfield.
No way you can stop all our receivers. Just too much talent. Doubt if we have thousand yard receiver this year. I could be wrong. Still a long way to go. :ninja::wink:

Eleven targets with an average of 24.8 yards across the board? 27.3 if you don't include the 0 yards from Helm? I'll take that every game.

I think I remember Bowles making a special teams tackle. He looked like a solid receiver, but we are too deep there for somebody who doesn't seem to have developed to play.

As for the general conversation: I think it's great to see the ball spread around as much as it was. And we should expect more of the same. While we have excellent starters at WR, and while North is a freak, we might have the best 2s and 3s in the SEC. And we have 3-4 tight ends who have looked solid as well.

We can keep rotating in fresh bodies every few plays, exhausting the defense and running around (and, with North, Croom, and the TEs, through) them. I think that North gets 700, and that we have a few between 450-500, and a bunch clustered around 250-350. Win this offense, and with this kind of depth, that is how you win a few games.

He made some good plays on special teams Sunday night.

Okay, thanks. I was not thinking about special team players. The plays that are on special teams happens so fast it's hard (for me at least) to see all the players numbers. It's hard to believe that Bowles was like a 4 or 5* wr player coming in and not being able to break through for playing time on offense even though we do have some outstanding players in that position.

I highly doubt we will have a 1000 yard reciever this year. Too many options and most are short passes anyway.

I very well may be wrong, but I think it was Gaulden that made the plays you refer to on special teams. Both guys wear #7 and I think the new PA guy got them mixed up. May be wrong though.

I see no problem at all with this many receivers getting catches. Nobody will get tired and everybody is stepping up.

Although I think JW had a great game, if he had not made two long overthrows, you could tack on another 150 yards passing, and Malone would have had 100+ yards! JMO
