Well this sucks...everybody agrees...I thought this would get ugly. :bad:

Yeah Mikey, I figured everyone would agree. When I go, I feel like I will get beat up if I start yelling. Everyone around me (old people, no offense, but they are old people that are around me) looks at me like I'm crazy. Peer pressure man, forced me to shut up and quietly watch the game, I thought I was at a PGA tournament.

Big completion for 30 yards on a 3rd and long....quiet Tiger Woods fist pump!

The stadium needs something to get and keep the crowd in the game.

I have an idea on helping get the crowd into it... put a DECIBEL meter on the field and have it show the current, average, high/low for game, and ALL TIME HIGH decibels in the stadium. The readout could be placed throughout the stadium. Thoughts?

I think it's a mindset more than anything else. Many Vol fans have "Atlanta Braves-itis". We've just been too good for too long and it has taken a lot of emotion and replaced it with expectation.

I think the fans often mirror the level of excitement on the field. When you have big plays and big hits, the fans chime in.

Our offense has become quite conservative and has taken on a more workmanlike tone...so go the fans.

When you have big yardage plays and things like that going on, the noise gets louder and more excitement is generated...check it out!

All of those people have grey hair because of Randy's Offense. It's so boring everyone's hair turns grey because the games go on and on and on like eternity. Drive and stall drive and stall like an old grey hair person driving. If we could only get some swagger on offense that place would be rocking.

I remember that 92 Florida game and boy was it loud. Every game that has been mentioned for being loud were before Randy. Back in the day. The loudest game in Neyland was that unbelievable offensive explosion against Miami. Hahaha a Randy special.

FIRE THE BUM

Hopefully, crowd volume will not be an issue this Saturday.

one suggestion to increase crowd interest is raiese ticket prices. this will make it more so only the REALLY interested fans by the tickets. they are the ones who scream the whole time. anoter idea is add another student section becasue theya re also super loud. the old guys can talk somewhere else.

I disagree. It seems to me to be the opposite. You're saying that just because you have money, you're a better vol fan? In my experience, there are A LOT of great vol fans out there, that get loud at home, because they've never been able to afford to go to a game. They just can't handle the cost of taking a their family to the game, and they're not going to go without them.

Eh, another student section wouldn't help, there's not enough extra students that want to go to the games. A lot, sadly, don't give a damn about football.

I think that to make the stadium loud, the atmosphere has to be there. Noon kickoffs are not conducive to loud crowds. Student's are still hungover, most people haven't been able to tailgate much, they're tired from working all week, then getting up at 6am to get ready for the game. 3:30 kickoffs, like this weekend, will help, but I don't see how a Top 10 team can't get evening/night kickoffs if they want them. They can fight at get that put into the contract, that they refuse noon kickoffs, especially when it's pushing the upper 90's outside. Sunburns, heat, and alcohol don't make fans rowdy.

Also, if they'd execute on some big plays, the fans would get excited. Sure, we like keeping the TOP and running down the field slowly...but its the touchdowns that get fans excited, the big gains...not inching down for a FG attempt. That's like making out with a hot girl, then pulling away and realizing it's your sister.

I was at the game on Saturday and after staying out late, getting up early, having bourbon with biscuits, sitting (and standing) in 90 degree heat which eventually led to sunburn and finally the pace of the game....I admit.....I wasn't very loud or active by the end of the fourth quarter. The 12:30 games have to go. 3:30 is ok but nothing gets Neyland fired up more than a night game. At least you have time to recover from the night before.

I agree! Neyland at night is great. Early games every where are less noisy.
As far as the older fans go, let's not forget they deserve respect. But older fans need to know that they used to scream and yell too so they need to be ready and expect it. But lets not fight about it. Hey we are all VOL fans. :lolabove:

How long has it been since TN whipped a top 10 team at Neyland. On TV at the Ole Miss game it appeared that the fans acted like parents in the park watching thier children play frisbee while they gossiped with thier neighbor. I don't believe TN has a real strong fan base. What we really have is a good reason to get together and socialize and party. The game is secondary IMO for the average fan and it shows on the field in the big games. We have no 12th man at UT. With 109,000 people we should have one of the loudest rough-and-roudy crowds in the nation. But instead we have alot of blue-hairs who just sit around comparing each others "big orange outfits" and complaining about anybody who stands up in front of them and cheers. Please , if you can't come and rabidly support the team then just stay home and have a party or stay in your RV. Take lessons from Fla and LSU!!!

This is an interesting point that I equate with UK basketball. There is a constant call for old timers to give up their seats for more enthusiastic fans. The interesting thing is that when the Cats play exciting ball, then the crowd goes wild. You see, they are educated fans, they know team potential, and they know good BBall from poor BBall. I think the Neyland crowd represents this general attitude as well.

Before this season, they were promised an exciting offense, and a jawbreaking defense. So far they are only getting half of the promised product.

I am not condoning sitting on their hands, but I understand why they are doing it. By the way, you will see a dramatic change in the mood of the Swamp and Tiger Stadium now that the honeymoon phase is over with their new coaches.

Some interesting points and ideas above.

First, the idea of raising ticket prices? HORRIBLE idea. That would do nothing but make things worse. A better idea would be giving away free tickets in 12-packs of Pabst -- nothing rowdier than drunken rednecks. For real, though, it's the younger crowd (who, traditionally, is a little less "well-off," from both a monetary and sobriety standpoint) that makes the noise.

Second, YES, we need big plays. You can't yell your lungs out for every 4 yard run or pass underneath. It's the 60-yard post (which was overlooked last weekend, despite being wide open) that gets people fired up. Right now, we're having to count on the defense for the only plays to holler about.

Finally, I like the idea of some sort of gimmick or encouragement to make noise, other that a microscopic gesture on a cheerleader's sign. Not sure about the "decibel meter," but something along those lines.

I think it all depends on the time of game at any stadium. I have been to most in the SEC. UF, LSU, Bammer, UGA, Hogs, MSU, Ole Miss, South Carolina and of course to Vandy. The day games at most places are quieter. Neyland at night, under the lights is a much different place. The loudest place I have ever been was at Neyland in 1998 for the Florida game. For some reason people are more rowdy for night games than they are for day games. Espsecially for the JP early games. I could never guess why folks are louder at night?  :p

My feeling exactly. I think part of it is the heat... another part is having ALL DAY to build up to the event. Either way, UT games don't belong at 12:30!

For those unsure of why early games are quieter, or who think it must be the heat. . . . there's someone you should meet:

I just wanted to add some fuel to the fire by saying the CMR is 2-0 in Neyland. Enjoy :biggrin2:

I think that's a great idea. I was so disappointed the last time I was in Neyland.I WANTED to yell, and get into it, but the guy next to me kept giving me dirty looks if I so much as breathed and somebody behind me only knew two words: Sit Down!..

:bad:

I'm tired of the people sitting in/around the student section yelling to sit down... but we discussed this before, in another thread.

If someone ever tells me to shut up or sit down at a football game, we're going to be brawling. I got all over some moron at the 5 OT Arkansas game a few years ago when he gave up on the Vols and left. All he had to say was that I was wasting my breath when I was screaming and "Do you really think you're making a difference?" Thats as close as I've ever come to tossing someone over the rail. If you don't want to be around people who are yelling and hooting and hollering and standing for their team, DON'T GO TO A FOOTBALL GAME!!! :aggressive:
Go watch golf or tennis. :snoring:
Let someone who cares have you ticket, and help the team on to a victory.

It's true though.  Neyland is an intimidating place, but it could be almost unplayable for our opponents if the crowd stayed in the game.

Don't think it will be a problem next week though.

yeah, i agree ga. i went to the uab game, and ppl seemed offended when i yelled and tried to get ppl into the game. like they were watching an opera. it is really sad that we cant have fans like florida has. b/c hate them or love them, they won that game for them a few weeks back against us. they obviously, imo, arent as good as us.

i think it is our gameplay though. we grind it out and win close. and we really havent been explosive since peyton left. but i know that the only reason i go to the games is to see some orange ass whipping. i can party at home.

i think maybe we as a state are kinda lazy and would rather sleep during the game. hell i dont know. but we do need to get rowdy.

When we go up 14-0 in the first 10 minutes vs Ole Piss, i can understand it turning into a social gathering.

Don't you think that's the same everywhere?

From my experience most all fan bases behave the same under similar circumstances.

Ya should've heard the crowd in Tuscaloosa during the Florida game Saturday. It made me jealous...

Which comes first, the chicken or the egg. Does TN have to make a good play for us to rock the stadium or do we rock the stadium and that encourages the team to play well. Alot of it is the fickel TN fan. If they don't play well, the fan gives up and sits on his hands until the team gives them a reason to cheer. On defense, there should not be a corner in this stadium that the opponent can run to get away from the twelth man on any play!

GA Coach Richt says it best, "When that crowd is in that frenzied pitch, especially in that first series, it's a shock to your body."
