Do you think Hopson would have had his own ball out there? He would have just taken away the points that Tatum, Harris, and McBee had. Hopson isn't some offensive juggernaut that can't be stopped.

But when arguably your best player is out, the other players don't just automatically make up for the points he would have. If they did then losing a player would have no effect on a team at all.

For most teams it doesn't, but we have capable scorers on this team. Hopson doesn't average 29 a game. He averages 17, and Harris and Tatum are very capable at picking up the slack. Hopson doesn't do anything else on the floor but score, so let's not pretend he lifts this team up to another level.
I would bet that Bama's defensive scheme would have been totally different if Hopson were on the floor. Who knows what would have happened. But to play effective defense on Hopson, you have to be all over him on the perimeter and in the paint. If we played the way we did today with Hopson, we would have won this game in regulation by 8-11 points.
Why? What does Hopson do that would require changing the defense? Sorry, I disagree. I think the zone today would have eaten Hopson alive. He's just not that dynamic of a player on offense.
That's a bit of a stretch. He's been solid, and I think we probably win this game if he's on the floor. But, he's only been exceptional in one game this season, Pitt.
He was good against LSU as well, but I'm pretty sure I could have scored double digits against that team.
Again, I don't dislike Hopson, but I'm not pretending he is some gamechanging player. When he is on 3 times a year, he's great. When he's not, he's an ok scorer and decent open 3 point shooter. That's about it. He's also good for a lot of turnovers and pretty bad defense. He is what he is.
