Of course I understand the excitement and buzz around Jon Gruden's name being brought up in the same sentence. God knows this fan base has gone through hell and deserves a coach like Jon Gruden or any top notch coach. Our facilities are some of the best and our fan base is second 2 none.

However...There is a small part of me (seeing how the past couple of years have gone) that cant help but have that nagging nightmare when I have this voice saying "you better get Gruden now or Tennessee will be a joke for yeeeaaaarrrsssss!!! MUUHAHAhhah" in this really creepy satin voice......and then just when we think its over ESPN has breaking news and the tv flips on and the most annoying BIG10 commentators say "Gruden publicly shames Tennessee and leaves them at the alter" and it has a picture of Smokey with his pants down on stage in front of his entire NCAA classmates.....and this is repeating in the background... Carrie - They're all Going to Laugh at You - YouTube

HAHAHA Now I admit that is the dramatic/comedic version, but t:eek:lol::lolabove:he overall point I'm making....does it worry anyone else?

Absolutely. When Grubage ISN'T hired, and another coach is, the majority of people in here are absolutely going to hate the hire because "it's not Jon Gruden". Y'all may disagree, but that's the way it is. Get so hyped up about something, and then when it doesn't happen.....the alternative is hated and despised.

Think about it this way: You're a kid. All you've talked about all year is getting a new mountain bike. You simply can't think about anything else other than that mountain bike. When you parents tell you "you might not get a mountain bike", you argue with them constantly, because you're convinced if you want it bad enough, it'll happen. You wake up Christmas morning......to a year old ten-speed. That's exactly what this whole Gruden thing is like.........a bunch of kids wishing for that bright, shiny mountain bike; and probably getting a really good year old ten-speed out of the deal.

After losing to candy this year, I think we are pretty much used to the laughing. Go big or go home.

I don't care what you say, I want the mountain bike. Anything else I don't want to hear it, naynanaynaynaynay....

and if I have to settle for a handmedown 10 speed, it is going to stay parked in the garage......

until probably about August I guess.

My point is that if the UT administration continues to let this fester and build up without a denial then the fan base is heading one of two directions. If Gruden is hired then he is seen as the savior of the program and will have extreme momentum heading into do or die season in recruiting. The program will have a huge turn around and atleast get back to the top of the east within 3 year in my opinion.

Then there is the thought that if UT continues to let this bubble up and fester to serve as a smoke screen for there real search that the fan base will be totally deflated. Even if they bring in a great coach that would have been seen as a great option 3 months ago it would now be seen as a failure and loss of momentum in recruiting and within the fan base.

By allowing this to continue to build up they have entered thought process throughout the fan base that can not be undone. If there was no truth to this then a denial should have been announced first and foremost by not doing that they are either shooting for the stars/ rock star status or setting the fan base up for what they have become use to for the past 7 years....disappointment at rock bottom.

Its do or die...what say you.

My point is....you don't get bigger than Gruden. If they are using him as a smokescreen for another coach, people are not welcoming him with as open arms as they once was. It would be in their best interest to deny Gruden so the fans can get over it enough to welcome in the new coach. I'm not sure what UT is doing.

This.

You don't use the big fish as a smokescreen. So either he's been the target all along and we have him or we're still ironing out details, or we never had him. And if we never had him and Hart let the speculation run wild like this, then I'd say he's created a PR nightmare.

OP has a seriously underrated post.

In essense, by saying nothing, they have built expectations to a fever pitch. If Gruden falls through, ANYONE else is on the B-list. I mean a clone of General Neyland himself is on the B-list at this stage.

Hart et al. have to sign Gruden. Expectation management by the AD for our fanbase right now is Gruden or nothing. At least, that's my gut feeling on how the majority of fan's feel. I know that's how I feel.

It is sad but at this point if we are disappointed in the hire and it is not Gruden or someother HIGH B LIST guy (Stoops, Carroll, ect...) then it will be hard for me to get excited about anything orange for a while. I will still be a fan but it would be the first time in my life that I just won't be counting down like I always have. I do want a let down, we have been in letdown mode for 7 years and the AD is screwing the pooch with no denial unless they have their guy...setting up for extreme high or lowest of low.

Call me crazy but I think the AD not telling the fans anything is poisonous. I think we should be privi to some info here. I mean sit down and GIVE us an update or SOMETHING!!!!

I'll be honest with ya - right now, I feel like Stoops or Carroll would be a let down. I really would. I'd be excited about the season, but the off-season would probably be the worst in my lifetime.

I know that is my entire point....they have let it bubble and build up so much by not having a denial that EVERYONE is now a let down and we build no momentum in this entire thing. So either temper the fan base and prepare us for a let down or stay quiet only if it is 100% Gruden and prepare to go down as the great AD in history of UTK....potential to head in the extreme direction...which ever direction they choose.

This is something that I find confusing. If you look around the country at other schools trying to hire a coach, you hear were the schools have expressed interest from legitiment sources. During our search, your not getting much of that.

We could promote CUT to OC from Duke and bring back the Chavis-Fulmer duo ... Creating the Trio that always won, but no , everybody's gotta have their change .
