Dickson, I'm not a big fan of Strong or any others candidates really but Big East and like conferences are a proving ground for up and coming coaches. Saban, Petrino, Kelly, Sumlin, Meyer, etc all were head coaches at lower levels. My concern with Strong is he hasn't exactly dominated what should be inferior coaches like those guys did. 24-15 is concerning.

Exactly.

In reality the big fish got away. These other names are all about equal. We would be as well off to promote Chaney and get a good DC. Bring in tee Marin for WR coach and keep Jay Graham and Pittman. IMO

I would add Mora Jr to the list. He will be interviewed this week and will very likey take the job. I would not be surprised to see him hired before the weekend. JMO

2 winning seasons and a BCS bowl in his 3rd has me hope we hire Charlie Strong. The guy is going to be a very successful coach.

Would love for him to beat Florida and then accept the TN job. Match made in heaven

I don't see that as an option. Hart can not wait until early January to hire a coach. Especially if it is a 2nd tier guy like CS. IMO, the hire would have to be willing to take the job and pass on coaching his team in the bowl game. With the kid flopping from Ole Miss to UL yesterday, I would guess he was told CS would be returning. JMO

Jones- Everyone is hoping he will turn into Kelly at Notre Dame, I am calling him unproven
Gundy- Never really bought into the hype, his style would only be successful in the B12 or B10
Fisher- Great Recruiter, decent coach, offensive guy is not what UT needs right now.
Strong- Good Recruiter, good coach, defensive mind awaiting his chance (pull the trigger Hart)

If he comes to Tennessee, he will not coach the bowl.

Why exactly would Gundy's "style" not fit in the SEC? People said Sumlin's "Style" would not work either. OSU throws it well and runs it well. He would just need a solid DC and he would do just fine IMO.

I just don't understand the facination with Strong. If he is hired, I will support him and gladly eat crow, but I don't think it would turn out any better than Dooley. The guy just doesn't have enough experience as a head coach and would not be able to recruit to the level that we need. It's the f'ing big east for crying out loud.

Strong is easily, unquestionably a better recruiter than Gundy is and a better defensive coach than Gundy or Fisher.

While I might give you that Strong is a better defensive coach, no way would I agree he is a better recruiter. Maybe you should take a look at the team recruiting rankings. UL is ranked #73 this year. OSU is 25. osu has had a higher rated class each of the last 3 years(thats as far back as I looked). I would think hiring a new DC with SEC experience would make Gundy by far the better candidate IMO.

I agree with you but, to play Devil's Advocate, he is recruiting guys to the Big East and Louisville.

That being said, it seems like 3 years in there, he would have more than 9 commits at this point. He hasn't really pulled anyone of note except Bridgewater.

I also feel that we would be getting the leftovers from UF, FSU, and UGA among others with Strong heading up recruiting for the Vols.

Strong would not make it into my top 8.

Butch Davis.

* Good defensive minded coach and Xs & Os guy.
* Great recruiter
* Has experience in turning around dumpster fires.
* Hire him for four/five years, get the talent back in, get a couple of 8 win seasons, and when he retires we finally look appealing again to the home run guy.

What dumpster fire has he turned around? How is he a great recruiter?

He assembled what most agree was the most talented college roster ever at Miami and pulled top classes at a horrible UNC. He is getting paid to spot talent for the Bucs right now. The man can recruit.

I like both Fisher and Strong, and think either would be a good hire. Between those two Hart would have to assess which has the intangibles--leadership skills, fire to win in the SEC and get Tennessee back to the top; recruiting; and crucially which could put together the better staff. That last point cannot be underestimated--you are only as good as your staff (See Dooley and Sal--uggh). I have a feeling Fisher might have a slight advantage when it comes to staff but who knows.

RE Gundy: If you are Hart how do you avoid getting played by this guy and his agent and OSU, which surely will raise his pay--and he's already making a lot now. His osu teams score a ton but give up a lot of points. I want more defense--but you gotta have two great coordinators. Recall the two excellent defensive teams we've had in recent years--2007 and 2005 (I think) and our offense was HORRIBLE both years, reverse of this year.

Mora: Wild card, if he's interested. A lot of NFL experience, which I like. Has he been an NFL head coach? I think he's surely a damn good coach--and could probably put together a serious staff--but a west coast guy who has moved around a lot. Would he stick in Ktown for five years? Not if he's successful, I say. Would stay away.

Butch Davis: would be a solid hire, but would prefer Fisher and maybe Strong first.

Not big on Gundy and do not see the infatuation with this guy. These are all very good options for UT. Mora coached the Falcons and Seahawks. If Mora is an option I'd take him ahead of the rest.

Gundy has been little better than average, but has experience.

Fisher inherited a great program and has done pretty good.....but not dominated by any means.

Strong was completely avg the previous 2 yrs but had a great yr this yr.

None of these are the SPLASH hire we were looking for. Everyone knows this is a critical hire that will determine our place in the SEC pecking order. If this is what our programs history + a couple billionares + peyton manning comes up with then of course its a disappointment. Maybe its time to pray for divine intervention.
