What is your reflection on the LSU schedule last year? Didn’t seem to hurt Kimmie to back the hell off on her non-con.I said it could very well be the least challenging nonconference schedule ever. You can argue it's not, but at the very least it's certainly in the conversation. The only previous nonconference schedules you gave that were even comparable were the last of the Holly years, when she was deliberately scheduling light to try to save her own butt...

Not so hotly contested. Just apparent. Most think she got a little forward of her skis last year. Record suffered, but they overcame.Their schedule was a joke, which is why I would never compare it with this schedule. I can point to several examples of national champions who played pitiful schedules. That was never the point.
I'm really not sure why the notion that Kellie clearly sprinkled in a few more cupcakes as a correction to last year's humbling schedule experience is such a hotly contested topic...
I'll look at all the schedules when they come out, but excepting UConn who usually needs to play more top non conference opponents every season because the Big East is usually weak. I don't expect anyone to play more than three top ten ranked teams didn't happen last year and I can't see that suddenly changing. There are multiple ways to skin a cat IMO when it comes to scheduling. You can schedule weak or hard but success comes down to how the team is managed and what the ultimate goals are from these games.
I think scheduling to heavy and too light can be detrimental to your team but not always the case. Even by Mulkey scheduling standards, last years was an all time low for her, granted I know she says the schedule was made before they got Reese and all those transfers (LSU lost their entire roster essentially). LSU had 9 new players so while they coasted, the OOC allowed a team of a bunch of newcomers to integrate, build confidence and chemistry, as well as stay mostly healthy early on. The downside is playing so many weak teams, you don't truly evaluate where you need to improve but you limit your NCAAT resume. LSU had to have major success in SEC play to earn a quality seed but they ended up going 15-1 during the regular season.
I think playing challenging games early are good because you are more likely to see where you stand and what you need to improve on. Plus winning some of these games you strengthen your seeding for NCAAT and give your team a lot of confidence. On the flip side, the danger of over scheduling is you risk losing a lot more games and physically the games are much more taxing so you could potentially see an increase in injures (saw many examples of this last season). Harper may have over scheduled early last year and we risked potentially not earning a hosting bid but won some key games down the stretch to earn a top 4 seed. While we may have over scheduled I still think we should have won some of those early season games, if you are going to schedule tough you need to at least come out on top in some of these matchups. Losses to Ohio St, Indiana, Gonzaga, UCLA, VT, Stanford. A win or two over those group of teams changes a lot of things..
But I don't think anyone should have an issue with this years schedule. I think its a good blend of competitive games and some fluff games. Hopefully we actually come out on top of some of these OOC games especially the ranked matchups.
She got way forward was about to go down the slope head first. No need to play that many elite teams unless the NCAA changes their criteria. Right now a game on the road at Liberty can be just as good a win as winning against a top ten team as both are quad one and are treated the same. Not so hotly contested. Just apparent. Most think she got a little forward of her skis last year. Record suffered, but they overcame.
Our OOC Schedule will definitely be tougher than Mulkey's cupcake schedule. She has no excuse this season, but I expect she'll feast on cupcakes?I said it could very well be the least challenging nonconference schedule ever. Quote 1 Wow, we already knew she was scared off by UConn, but Stanford too?
I really don't think there is much debate -- this is the easiest LV non-conference schedule in the NCAA era...
Quote 2 I'm really not sure why the notion that Kellie clearly sprinkled in a few more cupcakes as a correction to last year's humbling schedule experience is such a hotly contested topic...
The reason it became "such a hotly contested topic..." is because your first post in this thread can only be read as denigrating the out-of-conference scheduling for the Lady Vols this season. And, when people responded to your denigration by pointing out that the schedule, which admittedly has fewer powerhouse opponents than last year's ooc schedule, included what is expected to be a number of top 10-20 teams and is not the entirely "cupcake" schedule that you described. Only now do you describe it as a "correction" to the overly difficult ooc from last year.
It appears that you are taking differing positions simply to create an argument. At least, in my opinion.

I don't give a rat's behind where this sched stands in the great LV pantheon. Irrelevant. I care how it learns the painful lesson fm last season, how it's in tune w what we know about current NCAA tourney selection criteria, and how it serves to prepare this team. IMO, in those terms this schedule is just about perfect.
Legit top teams. Indiana, ND, and Ohio State in one tough stretch, simulating tourney situation. Good teams coming at you fast. Fla State, a top 15 team, provides a real challenge on the road. This is just enough top teams. I do miss the Stanford tradition though.
I'm assigning Oklahoma to the middle tier of games, only bc I don't know much about them. Then MTSU at neutral site, Liberty on the road, and Troy at home are exactly the kind of second tier but decent teams you need in non conf.
I see cupcake city only in Memphis, EKU, Wofford, and of course the exhibition w Carson Newman.
Tested plenty at home, neutral and away, a good mix of midmajors, and enough cupcakes to give everyone PT. I just hope the rest of KJH's decisions this season are as well executed as this schedule.
I pretty much agree with all of this! I'd rate Oklahoma a little higher, though - they lost some key super seniors from last year, but they still have 6 top 100 Hoopgurlz recruits, including 2 top 25 recruits, on their roster, along with the reigning two-time Big 12 6th player of the year, Skylar Vann (who was unranked out of high school).
I don't think Memphis is a total cupcake. They were #65 in the NET and #78 in Massey Ratings, and they made it to the Super 16 of the WNIT. And with Alex Simmons as the new coach, I think they'll be on the upswing. Liberty and Troy are more cupcakes than that, at #106 and #139 in the NET and #119 and #136 in Massey, respectively.
Wofford is a cupcake (NET #178), but they did win their conference regular season, and nearly beat Florida on the road in the WNIT. Eastern Kentucky is definitely the biggest cupcake (NET #211) but it allows us to play Coach Sam's former team.
That's only 4 teams outside of last year's NET top 100. Last year we played 5 non-conference teams outside of the NET top 100. And we don't have anyone nearly as bad as Wright State on the schedule this year (they were NET #304).
Why would you choose to add accurate facts to someone’s post that has an agenda, but no facts to support that agenda?Stanford chose not to renew. They’re cutting down on non-conference travel. UConn insisted on playing in January and the SEC could not accommodate their available dates. Neither decision was made by UT there.
Using the ESPN off-season poll, UT is playing the #6 and #10 teams at home, travel to #15 and face #7 at a neutral site. I don’t think four top-15 teams in nonconference is a cupcake schedule.

Vince knows how to get wins look at the Texas non conference schedule. Other than UConn they played the LSU game.
