Like you, I have no idea what goes on in his head. He tends , unlike most coaches, to shoot straight in interviews. Here are comments from a few days ago.He won’t stay 5 years. This is for recruiting.
“I never said I wasn’t going to come back,” he told the crowd. “Everybody else wanted you to retire and I wasn't quite ready to do that. I think every coach here probably at some point feels like, obviously, there's an end to this, right? There's an end. Whenever that is. But in the meantime, there's a lot of kids that come to our school, and I don't care what anybody says, they come to play for us as coaches. We buy into them; they buy into us.”
Auriemma received a technical foul in the rivalry game for throwing a water bottle onto the court as he shouted at officials for a decision he disagreed with in the fourth quarter. After the game, Auriemma repeatedly criticized South Carolina's physical playing style and the lack of calls that the Gamecocks received.
"I just couldn’t keep quiet any longer. The technical was stupid, but I didn’t say anything for a long, long, long time," Auriemma said. "If you want to bring Lou (Lopez Senechal) in and you can see the bruises on her body. It’s just appalling what teams do to her now. It’s not basketball anymore. I don’t know what it is, but it’s not basketball.”
The fouls called in that game were almost even. If UConn played in the SEC Geno would have retired by now.
Proof that you’re correct? His record coaching against SEC teams. The old Big East was every bit as physical as the SEC. Georgetown, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Louisville and UConn, together with St Johns and a few others regularly beat the snot out of one another.he would have done just fine in the SEC.
I don't know how "fine" is measured in the SEC but I doubt it means a championship. Geno hasn't won a national title in seven years and is not picked to win one in 2025. SC has defeated UConn 4 out of the last 5 meetings and the game is in Columbia next season. Dawn says it's harder to win the SEC than it is to win a national championship. SC's closest game this year was in the SEC and it took a Hail Mary to win it.Auriemma is undoubtedly a great coach. He may have an outsized ego and sense of entitlement but he would have done just fine in the SEC.
Will not be coaching in 2029. Recruiting prop only. The greatest coach in college history never quits because nothing about playing the game changes. Contract through 2029. The numbers will take care of themselves. From Bialosuknia to Bueckers the beat goes on. Yes, UConn.View attachment 646421
I think that Gino would have done just fine in the SEC. He is a great coach. You don't have to resort to one of the most ridiculous statements I have seen here - "the idea that the SEC is tougher (than the Big East in women's basketball) is just homerism" to make that point. If your comment was true, I guess every sports pundit in WBB has been a homer for the SEC, as the Big East and now the AAC have never been rated close to the SEC in WBB.Proof that you’re correct? The idea that the SEC is tougher is just homerism. Even if it were true, it would be nothing to brag about. Some of us prefer basketball to MMA.
First, you have badly distorted what I wrote, and then used the twisted version as a straw man.I think that Gino would have done just fine in the SEC. He is a great coach. SC has gotten halfway to where Skylar and Muffet were in 2013. And not halfway to much else. They haven’t even gotten that far against Pat’s legacy. Dawn is firing hard and will hang bling for awhile. But she isn’t Geno’s equal as a coach…and she is a terrific coach. But I doubt she coaches another 20 years.I don't know how "fine" is measured in the SEC but I doubt it means a championship. Dawn will be winning championships long after Geno is gone. It's not what you've done in the past it's what you've done lately.SC has gotten halfway to where Skylar and Muffet were in 2013. No women's basketball coach has ever lost 5 starters to the WNBA from a 36-1 team and then follow that up with an undefeated season and national championship the next year.
In 2023 SC missed out on one banner but they did hang three. How many coaches have ever had 5 starters drafted in the same year by the WNBA? Sounds like that's worth another banner. No coach that I can think of has lost a national championship with a roster of 5 starters going to the W either.
So there is that. Every coin has two sides.
