Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2024-25

The team(s) that will beat SoCal going fwd will have a good backcourt and transition game. SoCal is not great in transition defense. They will also need to shoot well, so yeah, it’s not a big universe of teams that fit that mold, but they exist. I would like to add that UT would imo give them fits with turnovers and pace. Opposing teams against SoCal don’t need a big inside presence, just enough to keep it balanced. I think the way UConn played them defensively last year in the tourney was interesting, held them to 33% shooting overall.

Prince is very over rated, I stand on that assessment.

I agree, won’t play to her size, just wants to stand around and shoot 15’ fade away. She is easily defended by smaller players as well. Colorado has nobody even close to her size and they have dictated her positioning on every play.

As for this version of the Uconn team, I really am surprised how average their offense is, but equally surprised at how good their defense Is given they have virtually no post game on offense or defense….As small as their lineup is often times, they have been lights out on defense.

They get the benefit of the doubt to date for beating ND. But if I am not mistaken, they lost by over 30 to SC.

They did and weren’t even a little bit competitive in that game. Looking more like the ND game was ND laying an egg, as they have done a few times this season, and not so much TCU being good.

They beat NC State who hasn’t beaten anyone that matters yet. Those were their wins that catapulted them into the top 5 but that ship has sailed.

I will say this for HVL, she is putting up the best numbers of her career to date, shooting %, assists etc., she is playing as well or better than she ever has. Don‘t get me wrong here, I’m not a huge fan, but I give credit where it is due. I suppose I always look at her career against the times she has played against SC and she always struggled in those games. But she is a gamer.

On the eve (literally) of SEC competition, I was thinking yesterday about what we have learned so far. IMO, SC has not been the dominant team many expected thus far. Having a Boston or a Cardoso in the paint is hard to replace, they are still searching for their identity. SC is def an elite 8 type team, but I need to see more from them before I say FF material.

Same with Texas, great team, at least elite 8 probably. We will see if they have more. LSU will always be a dangerous team with their coach, but I could see them getting beat in the second or third round of the tourney. Oklahoma will be a tourney team also, doubt they are elite eight material however. UT is the great unknown, I lean towards saying they will be much better than their current #15 rank, I could see them creating havoc in the SEC tourney and the NCAA tourney. Underrated. Big potential for upsets.

Nationally, ND, UCLA and So Cal are front runners for FF material. I never count UConn out of FF potential either. my thoughts on Md are that they will come to earth once they hit the meat of the B10 schedule, but I give Freese credit so far for what they have done. Prob a SS type team. Duke might get better as the year goes on, needs watching, but prob a SS team also. I understand why some here don’t care for Coach Lawson, but I am of the opinion she is on the rise as a HC in the game. She will have Duke in the game for years to come.

Outside of those teams, the only one that has caught my eye is GT, Nell is a decent coach, not sure she has the talent to go deep this year however, but respect her coaching thus far this season in spite of the softish schedule. KSU is not a serious challenger.

Ohio State is 13-0 and ranked #10 defeated Stanford away by 25 points. Yes the same Stanford team that took mighty LSU to Overtime in Baton Rouge.

Big Ten
UCLA
USC
Ohio State

Top 3 imo.

Knox, I was remiss is leaving OSU out of the conversation. They have a good program and might well be a SS/EE type team also.
