I actually think it comes down to TV money. We live in a world where there is not much to do unless you have unlimited money. So, a game you can watch at home or at your local bar brings in eyes and ears and TV sees money for advertising dollars. Once nobody is making money they go away. The crowds at the actual game are not the final metric.Miami has issues filling their home stadium when they’re an undefeated Top 10 team…..no way their fans are going to the Pop Tart game.
The bowl games now, somehow, appear even more meaningless than they did before. But to be honest….i miss the old way. The bowls were a light hearted way to end the season and play against a team you rarely got to go up against. But, it is what it is.
They used to be something to look forward to when only two teams could compete for an NC and there wasn't so many of them. To add insult to injury, the sponsors started giving the lesser Bowls silly names (Gasparilla, Fight Hunger, Mayo, TransPerfect and etc ) and holding them in states that have less than ideal climates in the Winter months.Really a shame. I used to look forward to them. But times keep changing.
Playing a 7-5 non ranked Michigan team. Go Wolverines. They will probably follow the Florida State 2023 model and have barely enough people out there to field a team
Probably a lot of people will sit out.
I saw where Alabama will play Michigan in the ReliaQuest Bowl on 12/31.
My guess, enough people will sit out on the Alabama team where they will get trounced by Michigan.
Georgia Tech will dismantle Vandy if they play anywhere close to how they played against UGA in the 8OT game.I think bowl games are in trouble, b/c they're basically exhibition games w/o any implications on national standings, with how many opt outs there are, and portal exits. When they expand to probable 16 teams in playoffs, they make keep a few of them around, but most will go away, I'd think.
There's a few good matchups, like Vandy/Ga Tech...but not many. Ole Miss will embarrass Duke, and Bama same to Michigan and Florida to Tulane.
Probably right and it is truly a sad thing. Hopefully many of the teams and schools that would be playing in those lower tiered bowls will be going away as well since nobody is interested in watching them play. Now with the expansion of the playoff do you guys see these lower tier bowl games eventually going away? I don’t see how they’re even profitable, honestly if you’re not in the playoff now I don’t think anybody cares. I saw Miami going to the pop tart bowl, boy I bet they’re excited about that lol. I thought they should’ve done away with these lower tier bowl games years ago and should’ve raised it to eight wins.
I have always enjoyed them as well. But I guess the average person doesn't care. Let's get rid of the useless schools as well to make it a complete package. After all, nobody gives a **** about watching Purdue or Utah State. Right? Then it will be the big money conferences only that actually have a chance to play for the CFP. Yee haw.I'm hoping the bowls can get back like they use to be. I've always enjoyed the bowls. With only 12 getting in to the playoffs we'll still be playing in plenty of bowl games in the future.
The NIT was huge before the NCAA went to 32. The NCAA didn't go to 32 until 1974. Before that, the NIT was just as prestigious. In fact teams had a choice and some chose the NIT over the NCAAI started another post about bowls as well.
It reeks of the NIT for basketball. When there were only 32 in the NCAA BB tournament, the NIT had some following. Now, at 68 or so teams getting in, I could not tell you who has won the NIT for the last 30 years.
