Shedding blocks! Our defensive backs and LB's act like the blocker has some sort of super glue on them and seem to always have trouble being able to disengage from the blocker in time to make the tackle. Team repeatedly made 7,8,9 yards on those WR screens due to this.

Unrelated but McCullers ought to be ashamed by the way he played last night. Most of the time he was in he was just standing up and then making sure no one dived at his knees. He's the only DL I saw not playing with any degree of effort.

Edge containment, tackling, and maintaining assignments in the secondary.

McCullers checked out mentally a couple of months ago for the NFL. I stopped expecting anything from him months ago.

I think things will look better when we don't have Probst and 3 walkons in against the run and pass against sec teams. And maybe a de that gets his first sack before the last game.
We need speed and instinct.

We need speed. We lost contain on multiple occasions and those easy throws out to the RB in the flats were always first downs.

On the bright side we will see 6-7 new starters next year on D.

And that is what I'm excited about....New Blood....the best players on defense this year IMO were two freshman.....Vereen & Coleman....atleast the two I thought played w the speed capable to be special down the road.

Getting playmakers on that side of the ball and yes I agree they need to have speed if they want to play in the SEC.

We need to get smarted, faster, and stronger. If this team improves it's IQ we could see some better schemes.

Athletic ability, speed and defenders that like to hit someone....players with a nasty mean streak and bad attitude!

The only cure for this affliction is recruiting.

UT is so inept that scheme or coaching em up is not going to help. Stressing fundamentals and technique is all the staff can do. If you teach the youngsters the "right" way while they are being overwhelmed and physically getting their arse whipped they can grow up and mature in the weight room and the training room for two years down the road.

Regardless of the talent level, which was poor, there was still poor coaching in the defense this year. Certain aspects of the defense will get better as we get talent there. Other aspects will not. Poor technique shown this year by the defense is entirely on the coaches.

This is where the work in the weight room shows. They won't get the extra 15 practices for the bowl game, but the folks coming back next year, should be ready to get stronger starting in January. Our strength and conditioning coach gets to earn his money now

What I have to ask myself is if this bunch was coached up to its maximum potential would I be happy. The answer is NO, they would still suck and not be up to SEC standards. Is it the kids fault, NO. Next years team has the same problem but different circumstances I hope. They will be younger but better I hope. Will UT have enough experience and talent to surround these kid so that they will win more than 4 games, I don't know. I am hoping that Utah St, Vandy, GA, Ole Miss, South Carolina are not as good as they were this year. That Arkansas St does not sneak up on us and that FL is still in disarray. That KY does not make a huge leap forward and that Mizzou once again drops into where it was last year.

Front four must get better pass rush & do it with depth.

Backers don't lose contain & have depth.

DBs must recognize screen & defeat blocks oh and have depth.

Better tackling by all & let me see....

Depth.

That should do it. So I guess the number one thing is depth.

The D line has to get a better push. I prefer more athletic players compared to space eaters. It all starts up front. The LB's and DB's look a lot better all of sudden with a strong D Line.

We will have a much better pass rush with Vereen and Lambert, along with much, much more depth. We will have new DEs in Lambert, Barnett, Vickers, Brown, Miller, Henderson, Hendrix and Thomas, then there is Lewis....The DTs will be better. Williams and Carr will be able to help and Saulsberry will be back and we may get another.

Bates is the best coverage LB in HS, and Weatherd will be a beast. There will be some athletic depth in the LBs.

Kelly will not get caught up in blocks. McDowell and Gaulden also are quite physical as well.

There will be depth, albeit young though physical and fast, all through the defense next year.

I like the sound of that.
